Hi there,
can anyone help...we have a water softener and always draw the water for waterchanges outside as it does not go through the softener. But winter is going to be a little hard as the outside tap always freezes up. (Canadian winters eh) So what can I do...will the water from my inside tap harm my fish?
Any answers please!!!

Best thing to do is test both the water that comes direct from your indoor tap and the current tank water. You'd need to check for ph hardness etc etc so you can see just how much difference there is. Once you have those I'd suggest posting them up on the forums so the experts can suggest the best course of action. :)
Note:I don't count myself as one of them!

I would have thought that would be precisely the sort of question professor Snape would be quailifed to deal with. What is fishkeeping if not an advanced course in Potions? Mind you, now that he's on the run, he may be difficult to contact. :p

Well, it may be cold in Ontario, but it also has some of the cleanest tap water in the world. I think you'll find most fish keepers and aquarist use water from the tap, and most of those use it without any further treatment then water conditioner. Your tap water will have a ph of about 7.8 or so with no nitrates, and will be fine for most fish.

I think what littlefishies is wondering about is if the salt from the water softener will harm the fish. My moms house has a water softener and I know I can taste salt in the water. I am just guessing that is what you wanted to know.

Sorry, but I don't have an answer. There has got to be some people on here that have water softeners and keep fish though. Maybe they can give some ideas :dunno:
