Stocking my new 70g tank.

stocking so far:
1x BGK
4-5x Clown Loaches
1x Angelfish
1x Rainbow shark

POSSIBLY 1x African Butterfly

I need some advice on the possibility of some dwarf gourami going into my tank... what is an ideal number? and what is the kind of M:F ratio needed for them to stay happy little buggers??

Cheers

Dwarf guarami in a 70G Go for something bigger pal i would. The tiny guarmis are going to look lost once the BGK, clown loach, rainbow shark and angelfish get bigger. Also, your angel could become quite nasty once it gets bigger and doesnt take a liking to tiny dwarf gouramis swimming in its territory. Lonesome angels have been known to get problematic.

Have you concidered some of the larger gouramis perhaps?

Thanks for the reply! :good:

Don't really want to overstock, that's why I'm kinda going for a smaller fish... all the inhabitants are small now.. and yes I know they will grow over time and the dwarfs wont. I just don't fancy most of the larger gourami to be honest:/

Dwarves have such beautiful colours and i feel with my current stocking, I'm lacking some colour!-_-

Thorichthys Ellioti or Meeki - colourfull, midsize and perfect for that size tank.

Or why not get a few more angels, the more natural colours like silver/grey/black striped ones. Not the mottled/spangled man-made colours.

Apistogramma would look magnificent. You could also get a few more than usual in a 70G.

And how can you not like the bigger gouramis! I know the colouration on the small dwarfs is very vibrant and intricate, but the patterning on the Lace/Snakeskin gourami is beautifull. They are very elegant aswell when they get bigger. I've always found the kissing gouramis very intrigueing. I'd love to keep them at some point.

I dunno man - nice looking gourami don't come around very often here.. and when they do they get snapped up in an instant.. pretty much got to order them in if i want anything, but u have to commit to the buy before seeing the fish (not very fair is it). and even if it arrives dead u pay 50%...

I was originally going to get 2 angels, but if they don't pair it would just get ugly.. I don't like aggression in my tanks  so getting more would might get ugly... (p.s.: i prefer the natural colours/striped angels better than the man-mades)

You suggest nice fish man, but I dunno..... for some reason they don't do it for me... I like the colouring and stuff, but not enough to put it in my tank:S

IMO there is a chance the ABF will try to eat a Dwarf gourami if it is small enough. If the Pearl Gourami or the beautiful Snakeskin Gourami don't do it for you, how about an Opaline Gourami or a Blue Gourami. The Gold variety (Gold Gourami) is also great

I'm less worried about the ABF eating the gourami, more about the angel eating the ABF - but yeah, the ABF is a maybe, depending on my angels temper when I get it..

I am liking the look of the Opaline/ Blue gourami though! the gold doesn't do it for me...

Thanks for the response though :D

Okay you've sold me..

Next blue or opaline gourami I see I will be snatching up!

One question: How many would you recommend? and any particular ratio? (male:female)

YAY! :D

I'd recommend a single one as Opalines will chase eachother a lot if kept in pairs or more. In your tank you could experiment, 1M and 2F but whatever you buy, dont buy more than 1 male.

I'm leaning towards the Blues more than the Opalines - do they have a different temperament? or is it pretty much the same?

I've heard of the 1m:2f ratio.. now all I have to do is find the little buggers!

Thanks for all your help Carl :)

No problem ;)

Same temperaments :good:
The Blue Gourami is essentially a Three Spot Gourami, while the Opaline Gourami is a colour morph of the Three Spot Gourami/Blue Gourami, hence why it has different colouration. Also look out for the Moonlight Gourami, they are also pretty good-looking.
