well idk if i posted this when i had the 20 or not but now i have a 55 soon to be upgraded to at least a 75 so holding off on the CO[sub]2[/sub] kit for now, i have, from 3 amazon swords, to 3 more newer ones and 2 small "sprouts" all grown from the 3 origianl which i have cut and planted, however im having an incredibe algae issue thats affecting growth which i know can be fixed by a fast apreader, but out of what i want, which one do you think will work?
Narrow leaf chain sword
Melon sword
Ludwigia (repens)
Anubias
and i do have an oto which will be fine on algae disks so no probs there.

and swords do well with pruning right? i pruned mine to get rid of the ruffled leaves (which i dont know how to fix :shout:

Sorry Mojo, I'm a bit confused as to what it is you're asking!

What do you mean by "a fast apreader" fixing an algae problem?

Can you post a picture of these 'ruffled' leaves? Are they diseased or old? I used to have a sword, and when the leaves were young, they were 'crumpled' a bit, but as they grew, they straightened out.

I'd like to help if I can!

anyway, i cant post a pic because i sorta already pruned all the ruffled and extremely algae covered bits and they are all dried up now

but they did start out ruffly and some started to straighten out but then they got algae covered and stopped growing.

and what i mean by fast spreader is that i THINK (ifs its wrong please tell) that if you put in alot of fast growing plants or alot of plants they would outcopmete the algae for nutrients and thus solving the problem.

i do need more flow though as my 1 filter is on one side of the tank leaveing the other to stagnate, i am planning on getting another filter when i keep stocking after the move but i was wondering if i could use a powerhead position in the center of the tank to have some ort of flow?

i did some checking and i actually have 7 plants, 1 is really small topside but has 2-3 long roots and another is 2 plants really close together, they are all fine root wise but topside  they dont look THAT bad but compared to normal

il try and get pics after hw (tomorrow)

umm is there something i did to deserve not getting help or is it still unclear as to what im asking like what jaybird is saying?

I haven't responded because I'm clueless. Haven't got a clue what the answer is.

As for others, just be a little more patient. You gave it a day, but in that day you also bumped, and then another post.

I would go simple is best though. Simplify the questions as much as possible.

i'm also unclear on what your on with?

oky doky then i thought it was something else hehe

tank size: 55 gallons
CO[sub]2[/sub]:no
problem: algae
current plants: 10 amazon swords
current stock:
5 gold barbs
5 praecox rainbows
4 boesemani rainbows
1 stripped raphael catfish
1 oto
1 ballon molly

question: i have heard that introducing either alot of plants or a fast spreader will outcompete the algae and thus fix the problem, is this true?

question2: if #1 is true, which of the following plants would suit best as a fast spreader?
Narrow leaf chain sword
Melon sword
Ludwigia (repens)
Anubias

question3: if question #1 is not true, then how can i get rid of the algae?

question4: does pruning amazons help in any way?

hope this straighten things out :good:

i cant thik of any other way to put it :/ , i put some info in, staeted the questions clearly, please helpi cant find any info on this stuff

What algae is it?
Can you ID for us from this?

In answer to your previous questions....introducing fast growing plants is a good idea because they outcompete the algae for ammonia. This only works though if you give these fast growing plants what they want (CO2 and nutrients). Nutrients concerning us come in the form of micro and macro nutrients. Micro nutrients are trace elements such as boron, magnesium, iron. Macro nutrients are more important, these contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Carbon can be introduced via liquid carbon (Glutaraldehyde) or gaseous CO2 injection. If the plans don't get what they want, then the internal structure of the plant begins to break down which leaches ammonia (concentrations small enough to not harm fish or be registerd on a fish kit, but enough to trigger algae spores when combined with light).

By knowing the type of algae, we can start to find the cause of the algae.

ok then i have some sort of hair algae around and on some of the plants

and for the rest it looks like BBA but without the little fuzzy balls,i saw one but then i cleaned everything bt the plants all i did was prune the leaves that were too algae infected or that were dieing.

also got diatoms on the sides of the tank, cleaned that too, though notall of it since my oto is still getting use to algae wafers
