I am a newbie and have had a tank for about 4 weeks,Suprisingly my local fish shop never told me about fishless cycling so i purchased some fish (2 blue rams 2 opaline gouramis and a leopard sailfin plec).
Everything seemed fine then noticed white spots on the blue rams :( fish shop sold me some King British white spot medicine said it would do the job, :D .This did not do the job as more spots started apearing even after 10 days.
Fish shop told me to do 50% water change and redose which i did.
This has now given me Very high nitrate and nitrite levels which i cant seem to bring down.
I have purchased some nitrazorb to try and bring this down but after 2 days not much has changed.
Now one of my blue rams seems fine and has no spots but the smallest one is covered and also gasping for air at the surface.
Pls help if possible ????

Oh forgot to say i had a freshwater crab which has now died :(

is your tank cycled and are you sure it isn't ick on your fish? as far as the nitrate and nitrite, there is a product called prime that will make both of those non toxic.

do you know any stockists of this prime on web based in uk cus my lfs do not stock it thx

hi,
keep trying to bring the nitrate down, and keep treating the whole tank with a whitespot treatment. Many people get whitespot if you are new to fish.
try and bring the nitratrate down, if this fails and fish keep dying keep posting for help but dont give up !!

First off, :hi: to the forum.

As for your problems, have you removed carbon from the filter? Did you raise the temperature? Keep doing water changes to keep the nitrites down long enough for the tank to cycle, but this may not happen if the filter media you're using contains carbon, since you will have to remove it to keep it form leaching out the meds.

As stated, you will probably get more help in the beginners and tropical fish emergencies forums. *nods*

Sorry to hear about you having to start your hobby with so many problems, but you are by no means the first. We'll no doubt be able to set you tank straight, so please stick with us and keep asking questions.
