Hi Everyone,
I just joined this group hoping that some one will be able to help me with my Betta. Last night he wouldn't eat, which didn't really worry me much, but this morning we found him on top of the filter almost out of the water! Thinking he was dead, I touched him and he darted away. He swan for a few minutes and then returned to the top of the filter. He is just lying there in the current. He has a 2.5 gallon tank and a whisper filter. We have had him for two weeks and he has been eating just fine until last night. he has also been behaving fine until this morning. We have another Betta in a similar tank and have had him about 6 months. Everything is identical in both tanks. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you so much.

You've had him for 2 weeks so he's still fairly new I guess. Is your tank cycled? Test your water levels and post numbers here, it will help us into finding out what is wrong. Is he pooping? no big tummy?

I checked all the water levels. They are as follows:
Ph-6.5
Total Alkalinity- 60
Total hardness- 120
Nitrite NO2- .05
Nitrate NO3- 10
Amonia- 0

We bought some Bullseye to regulate the Ph to 7.0
I also checked my other tank and found very similar reading the Ph was also about 6.5 so I treated that tank as well.
We are not sure if he is pooping as we have never seen him poop. His tummy appears to be normal. Thanks

bettas are lazy they sleep or hang at the top looking dead. u dont always need especial foods just try normal flake frozen blood worms or live foods so he is active chasing them. also get a female if he follows her then he is fine

Did you change anything before he got sick? It could be stress or something. Try giving him some medicine.

Oh so sorry to hear he didn't make it :(

Looking at the figures you gave, you had nitrite which isn't good and also you are messing with the PH which is never a good thing either.

He still could have been harbouring something from when you got him. I always like to quarantine for 2 weeks just in case.

Again, sorry you lost him RIP little guy

pH up and 7.0 will always mess up your tank in the long run.

Betta's need a 5 gallon absolute minimum. 10 gallon is standard. The reason for bigger tanks is not only room for the betta but to keep the nitrate and ammonia stable. In smaller tanks it tends to build up VERY fast.

Please be careful when giving out that sort of advice, it is your opinion and that is fine, but you're stating it as fact, and it simply isn't fact. Most people who keep bettas state 1g 'absolute minimum', but choose to keep their betta in a larger tank, say 2g+. It isn't fair to come into a thread where someone just lost their fish and tell them 5g is the absolute mininum... because they'll think it was their fault, and it wasn't.

I don't get angry often, but you're making me angry. :sly:

Yes Tumeria, I would also strike that comment.

Your 2.5 g with filter sounds like a lovely home for a betta

Sorry about your loss. R.I.P.

Too Late!!! He is dead!!!

Sorry to hear this. :rip:

Did you let the Bullseye sit for a while? I use Bullseye as my pH jumps around like crazy. I lost several bettas as a new betta keeper by putting the Bullseye right in the tank. Let it sit in a tub without the fish for at least half an hour. Otherwise half an hour later when the stuff takes effect, the pH will change quickly to 7.0, stressing your fish.

I know this isn't on the bottle, they really should put it on there. :/ My LFS told me after several ill bettas.
