So I've decided to start dosing some ferts and liquid carbon as some of my plants are not doing great.

I bought a bottle of flourish Excel ages ago and I managed to kill a fish by dosing the recommended full dose on the bottle and accidentally pouring it over a fish which was dead the next day. So I abandoned the whole idea at the time.

The tank I want to start dosing has been setup since about the beginning of this year. It has numerous types anubias in it, some hydrophilia glabra, vasiliera(not sure what type but is not the giant one and looks like super thin tall grass) and a couple of different types of swords. The anubias and hydrophilia are growing crazy but the swords aren't and I killed the brazilian pennywort not long ago which grew big then all of a sudden went downhil. I think I also kept forgetting to swich off the lights and the tank got a bit too much of it and maybe exhausted the plants.

The tank has 3x 39w T5 Bulbs and is about 330 litre of water.
I've got Flourish Excel liquid carbon and TNC Complete ferts. I also accidentally bought the Nitrogen Excel bottle but I understand that the TNC Complete contains that.

So where do I start? How much Excel to start dosing and how much ferts, how often? How long should I keep the lights on for?

Edit: Forgot to mention that there's probably a lack of at least nitrAtes in the tank as they are always less than 5ppm, barely any orange colour on the Api test.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to plants so I would appreciate every little help.

About 8ml daily of excel should do you and TNC I have no idea as I've never used it, SO19firearms knows more so could PM him for daily doses.

Sorry for the stupid question, but do I dose these after I turn the lights on? Where do I poor it, near the powerhead for example to spread it around faster? How long to keep the lights on for as well?

Max photo period in a planted tank should be 8-10 hours max, mine are on for 8 hours. Yeah pour it near your powerhead before lights on really, I dose first thing every morning.

Thanks. I'll do 8ml a day of the Excel. I just PMed SO19firearms as you suggested. Hopefully he'll be able to help with the TNC Complete.

I am still waiting on a reply how much TNC Complete to dose every day. If anyone got any experience I'd appreciate it.

Replied :good:

for a 330 litre tank you should add 33ml per week. Ideally this can be split up over the week, so 5ml per day or 7ml if you only want to dose 5 days.

If you're an advanced user with a heavily planted tank with high lighting you can make the most of your added Flourish Excel or CO2 and increase the dose by 3 - 100ml per week - 15ml per day (7days ) - 20ml per week day (5days) but with this higher level of dosing you would want to perform a 50% water change every week.

Thank you so much!!!!

Just a quick question about the lights, how long?

Start at 8hrs and go from there - You can increase that if you're adding enough Excel and ferts or may have to decrease if the Excel isn't keeping up...depending on flow etc

You may well lose your Vallis? if you're now dosing Excel

Oh yeah, didn't see that, if you do dose it I'd put it up in for sale section and grab something else.

can i ask why? i used to have vallis and used excel and it always died but never knew why, i dont have any now and use aqua carbon but im just curious

I think it's to do with the ways in which Vallis can use Carbon - I think it's systems makes it vulnerable to the aspects of liquid carbon that make it a good industrial cleaner...
