Sorry to keep this thread rolling. But i went down to the fish store today And bought a 30 gallon and a 55 gallon. So I think I should have a good shot at housing some dwarf pikes. And possibly getting them to breed. I read throughly on them and though I found alot I didnt get a good idea of how to set the tank up to accomidate them. Any Ideas? Also plants for these puppies. I plan on having a nice array of plants, but unfortunatly I know nothing about plants. I just pick the ones that look nice :D Thanks guys.

Hey, I wouldn't worry about keeping the thread rolling but you might get more advice in the new world cichlid section. Until the dwarf pike was mentioned I didnt have know anything about it so I read this very well written article on the cichlid-forum web site. Dwarf Pike article. I am aware that there are species of pike in African lakes and river systems but I think the ones you are after are from south America.

Regarding plants, Due to the fact that the fish prefere low ph you wont have to worry about getting plants that can tolerate high pH (African cichlid standard). The majority of plants available are suited to a pH of around 6.5-7 ( I think). From my experience with plants it really is a frustratingly long process and it take a long time to get it right. But once you do all the effort is worth it. The guys in the planted section of this forum are a wealth of knowledge and will have an answer for any question you may have.

Ya the plants all depend on your lighting, co2, ferts, and a little bit on substrate and of course the PH. If you are going to just have standard lighting then you won't be able to grow high light plants but you can still grow some cool plants. Check out http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_cat.php?category=1 there you can see all the types of plants that you can have under certain light conditions, http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_list.php?category=11 also look at those since you don't want those.
Sorry don't know anything about pikes.

Cheers :good:

You might want to try Convicts. They breed in 10 gallons but a 20 is a dream. If you want aggression you got it. Mine paired off but i had another female and she was getting beat up so I put in a male and, The de-scaled him litterally not one scale left on his body. So he is still alive right? I put him in a breeder in hopes of survival and when I wake up the next morning do you know what I find? A female black convict beating up the injured one and the injerd one is twice the size!!!!! How is that agression for yah? They werent even ready to breed yet. Ohh and the de-scaled one died the next day in a livebearer tank from serious injuries( No scales, barley any finns, crooked tail, Bleeding jaw, and a bacterial infection from the wounds). And they are the hardiest fish avalible and the breed like rabbits.
