Today I noticed that one of my dwarf platys has a cut on the top of its "head", above the eyes but below the top fin. The scales have been pushed up so while there is a definate "cut" there is a lump above the cut too. The cut looked clean earlier but now it looks sort of white. The fish itself is acting strange, its spending all its time near the top of the water with its "head" pointed towards the surface, breathing there. Doesn't do much swimming and isn't interested in food (although does become more active when I feed the fish). I've seen it spit out some flakes once and that's it.

I haven't added anything new to the tank for a few weeks in terms of fish or ornaments. However, about 3 weeks ago I added one piece of bogwood which has sharp edges. There is part of it that the juvenile platys manage to hide under (there's a split and a gap) and I have seen one of the adult platys try to hide down there before. I think she might have injured herself there.

What do I do? Photos below, the 2nd one shows how the fish is most of the time. She only moved for the 1st photo when she was scared by my phone coming close.

It looks like it could be a cut alright. Have you done a water change? I'd do very regular water changes and keep a close eye on it. I'm not sure about adding meds, maybe you can give it a day or two and see if there's an improvement before you decide. Two of my platys had similar marks a few days ago, though not as bad but after a couple of days they were gone. I hope that helps. Someone with better knowledge might be along soon. :good:

If the cut is gone whitish, it's probably infected. I would treat her if you have a separate tank. If it's not too bad sometimes melafix and salt together in the water may help.
