Just to set the scene:

My sister has 3 common goldfish in a 35L elite tank and she's giving them to my dad who is putting all 3 in his 30L BiOrb with multiple guppies and cherry shrimp. IVe tried offering to swap my 60 or 70L tank for his BiOrb (not ideal but slightly better) and he's said no they will be fine in his tank.

I have said they will not be ok in his BiOrb but he wont listen to me, neither would my sister.

Basically i want to know who i could report him to? i know he's my dad but its not fair on the goldies and they have a spine so are covered by the animal welfare act of 2006.

Oh yeah he's also said he wants to put my 3 long finned danios in to, to which ive said no way!!

Please help me he's getting them this saturday or sunday cos my sister is getting a ferret. :-(

if i was you id just steal the fish

Ha i wish lol next door neighbour has a smallish pond might have a chat with him

I am sure the fish would like the pond better than the cramped quarters if you can talk him into moving them.

cant u explain he will LOSE his fish if he adds them? tell him there's a risk or just plain lie and say theyll all die!!!

That wouldn't be lying, that is the basic truth!

I did tell him but he said oh well they will be fine

LOL, i cant believe im reading this! :)

Make him join the forum and then ask, "can i put 3 goldfish in a 35l Biorb?", he will get a FEW replies :)

Dont they eat different food? like goldfish flakes? tropical fish eat tropical flakes im new to this hobby but this is madness :shout: :shout: :shout: :shout: :shout:

Betta_246 you can't just make people do things, it doesn't work. The most you can do is provide the evidence to support your opinion and encourage them to come to the right conclusions. Different fish do indeed eat different foods. I would never feed a molly the same thing that I would feed a betta, they have very different requirements. The molly and a goldfish need much more similar foods than the betta and the molly. Once you have had fish for a while and done some research into your own fish's natural diet, you will find that many of the fish have similar, but not at all the same, requirements. As a simple thumb rule, common livebearers need much more vegetable protein than any other kind of nutrients. Goldfish also need high vegetable content in their diets while many of the other common aquarium fish like a high animal protein food. These are just loose generalizations but it will get you started in the right direction to explore each fish more deeply. As far as stealing the fish, I would not start doing anything of the sort. Regardless of what we think of the treatment a fish is getting, people do still have property rights and the right to enforce them. I would not want to have a run in with the law over something that trivial. How do you convince the judge, who knows not a thing about fish, that you had a higher motive? I must favor reasonable persuasion over any form of force every time.

Just to update all 3 goldies have since moved to a friends 5ft tank.
Dad told me to put them down toilet, i didnt flush then friend came round and said she would have had them, so i went and fished them out and they now live with her in their own tank. Surprisingly they are completely fine  lol Her cats love watching them from the coffee table or with their face up against the tank, which the fish seem to like cos they swim up to the cats and go back and forth almost like they like watching the cats heads follow them, then fall off the table  silly kitties lol

you actually put them in the loo? thats worse than a overcrowded orb surley? just my opinion :)

i really cant belive what i am reading!!!
fish will not die going down the toilet, they also do not go to a fishy heaven down there, instead they will end up in a pit of toxic misery & endure a horrible death.
