I bought a pair of apistogramma cacatuoides, however I am not sure whether or not I have a pair or two males :-S
Can somebody please help me sex them and tell me what variation of apistogramma cacatuoides they actually are.. I have googled double red and triple red but to no avail! I do not know what variation they are, so some info on that will be much appreciated.
The only difference I can tell is that the one I think is male has more colour in his tail, his is fully coloured whilst the 'female' has only a little bit on the top of her tail.. but again I have no idea whether or not I'm right, also the female is the more aggressive, she chases the male sometimes but they don't ever really fight, just the occasional chase but its pretty minimal, there are times where they swim right past each other and nothing happens at all.
Anyway here are some pics..

These are all pics of the so called female:

These pics are now all of the male:

I have no idea, they don't even look like cacatuoides except for the tail fin... The female won't have anywhere near the colour of the male. They look more like apistogramma agassizi to me.

my male is tiny and looks like this:

the female is even smaller and looks like this:

hopefully someone else can figure this out... maybe its some sort of hybrid? I'm not sure..

its defiantly not the apistogramma agassizi because I used to have them in the same tank with each other.. so must be something else :-S

their pretty small, I have a betta that's bigger then them.. I'd say their about 1" or 1.5"

yep 2 male cacatoudes
if their both male is there a reason why one has a more coloured tail? is that due to them just being born with different pasterns or is it age? like will the other ones tail b as colourful aswel but just in time? the reason im asking is because i had another male before who was bigger but alot more colourful and elongated then the two i have now, but i swapped him for one of these smaller less coloured ones.

Its just because they're maturing at different rates, thats the only reason for the colour difference. Its like two kids growing up in real life, one might grow tall before he grows a beard, the other might grow a beard before he grows up tall ;) Same goes in the fishy world to :)

some male apistos look like females for a couple of months before they colour up they call them sleeper males you think when you get them you have trio 1 male 2 females then 2 months down the line it turns out that 2 are male lol i bought 4 agassizi once as 1 male 3 females 3 months down the line 1 of the others started colouring up i had 2 of each its not uncommon

Oh this is jus great lol so what should i do now? There in a 80 litre tank so its not a massive tank, should i take one back and just keep one male? Or should i just keep them both sein as the bickering isnt to bad? Are they fine on ther own? Or do they need a female? Thank you so much for all the replies! Very apreciated.

no just keep them incase im wrong give them a month or so to start colouring up plus anything can happen when there so young they pic up bacterial infections easily if i were you i would try get another 3 females then later when they have grown you can remove the less dominant male

So why are my apistos so colourful when mine are even smaller? seems strange :S
