I have a 40g tank and I just cleaned it with new canister filter. It's been running for a week and I put stress zyme in there and I wanted to make a really nice fish tank with some beautiful colorful active fish. Can I get some advice/opinions as to what fish or how many I should get? Also I'd like some live plants that are easy to takr care of. Thanks!

I would go for a large shoal of Corydoras (Stick to 1 type) maybe sterbia x 12, and a 20+ Cardinal Tetra shoal also :)
But saying that, Im Cory-bias :D

Welcome to the forums, and make sure you read up on Cycling your tank BEFORE adding fish. (Link in my sig)

how about a gourami as a centerpiece maybe a sparkling or a honey. i agree with above cycling is the most important part.

you could get  corys ( look them up and find the species you like best) and if you get a species that gets 3-4 inch grab 6-8, if you grab a smaller species then get yourself 10-12, for mid get some gold gouramis (2) or blue dwarf gouramis (4) and about 8 black skirt tetras, and then for the top get 6-8 marbled hatchet fish. ikd exactly what kind of fish you like but this is relatively easy set up that looks stunning so you can tweak it if you like, but the most important thing is to make sure your fish are happy.

yeah or honey/sparkling gouramis, really any gourami should do good.
