I have a platie with the same tail marking as yours. I was told by my LFS that they are 'Mickey Mouse Platies' because they have the Mickey mouse head shape marking on the tail. Mine are blue but I suppose you could get them in different colours. As to the middle one I'm not sure.

No; it's just another platy. The giveaway with livebearers (on the average) is the upturned mouth, used for taking mosquito larvae from the surface. Tetras and barbs (again, typically) have terminal mouths, i.e., they point forwards, for taking prey in midwater.

Fancy platies are hybrids of two species, X. maculatus and X. variatus, and hence there's a great deal of variation. This specimen looks a bit more like X. variatus than X. maculatus to me.

Cheers,

Neale

Believe the middle one is a Golden Barb :)

Ok most of you are on the right track. From these photographs, i can tell you the most likely variations(difficult due to interbreeding of platies for so many years).

The First is a Classic Mickey Mouse Platy golden, Female.

Second appears to be a X Variatus species(Although may contain X Malactus Genes due to the interbreeding of platies), looks most likely a male and is a Green colouration. Note that it is difficult to see if it is a true gonodopium or a anal fin held close to the body. Profile suggests male. Green Variatus Male (Mexican heritage from the thin body).

Third is again a Platy, also with variegated ( Mickey Mouse) patterning, however this one i am intensely jealous over. Notice the extended dorsal fin as well as generally longer fins: This is the Hifin variety in particular the Red Dorsalled, and the colouration appears to be golden. Hence this is a Golden variagated red dorsaled hifin platy. What a mouthful. From this camera angle it is a Male. This is a sensitive and very inbred species, the equivalent of the fancy guppy.

There yah go, you know what youve got. Look after that Hifin
