Hi all, i have had my 100 litre tank for many years. In this tank i have 2 fish of an unknown breed (picture attached) and one of them looks like it has either fungus or ammonia stress. I also have 3 male guppies, 6 female guppies, a new bunch of guppy fry (around 30, less than a week old) and 3 amano shrimp. Even though the suspected ill fish appears to have ammonia stress, the water in my tank was tested by a trusted pet store who said i had no ammonia in my water whatsoever. However, nitrate was shown in the tests and the pet store staff said that was normal as it is an ongoing tank but still recommended a water change which i am planning to do. Looking for opinions on whether my fish does have a fungal infection as i bought a product called PIMAFIX to give that a try. However i am worried that this will kill my fry. I would love some advice on what to do because i do not want to harm any other fish in the tank.

The fish are red eye tetras (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae), that appears to have a bacterial or protozoan infection.

Why is the water green?

-------------------------
The pet shop said there was no ammonia but some nitrate. Did they say anything about nitrite? If yes, what was the nitrite reading, and what is the pH?

-------------------------
How often do you do water changes & gravel cleans, and how much water do you normally change?

What sort of filter do you have and how often do you clean it, and how do you clean it?

-------------------------
Melafix & Pimafix should not be used in tank with labyrinth fishes like Bettas and Gouramis. However, they are harmless to most other fishes as long as you do not over dose and as long as you increase aeration.
Pimafix is unlikely to fix the issue with the red eye tetras.

The best thing to do when any fish looks off colour (sick) is a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate each day for a week. Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it is added to the tank.
If the filter has not been cleaned in the last 2 weeks then clean the filter too.

Then see how the fish looks after a couple of big water changes and gravel cleans.

To work out the volume of water in the tank:
measure length x width x height in cm.
divide by 1000.
= volume in litres.

When you measure the height, measure from the top of the substrate to the top of the water level.

There is a calculator/ converter in the "How To Tips" at the top of this page that will let you converter litres to gallons.

Remove carbon (black granulated substance) from filter before adding any medication.
