Need Fish Ideas For A 5 Gallon Tank

Dwarf puffers are the only fish worth putting in a 5 gallon tank in my oppinion. I love them and would reccomend them to anyone. Live or frozen or freezedried bloodworms is a good question, in my experience it just depends on the puffer. if you can get it to eat freezedried that will be the best for the health of your tank. Frozen makes too much waste because of the juice that goes in once they are thawed out.

Don't forget to get common snails for them from time to time. If you trust your LFS, you can probably get them to give you some for free when ever you want. DP's really love them, make sure they're smaller ones.

Welcome to the wonderful and highly addictive world of puffers. You'll love it!

Heh yea I can't wait to get them! I hope I can get them.. I'm still waiting on permission to bring the tank in to work. My bf won't let me have it at home so this is the only way I can. I work at a call center so everything has to go through the proper channels before anything can happen.. but I've got 2 supervisors on my side so hopefully I get an answer soon! Maybe I can cry a lot or something and convince my bf to let me have them at home if I can't have them here. They look super cute.

Do you think I could squeeze more than one in a 5 gallon tank? It has good filtration, and if I had lots of vegetation in there for them to hide in.. what do you think? I asked in an earlier post but I can't remember if anyone said anything about that. I wouldn't want the poor lil guy to get lonely :(

It's risky to have more than one puffer in a tank, especially one that small. With lots of vegetation you may be OK but the maintenance will be roughly doubled. Since it is at work and you have to get permission, I'd probably go with one. Otherwise you'll be making too many water changes.

Don't worry about the fish being lonely, the puffer will bond with you (sounds silly but it's true) and it will be very happy as long as you take proper care of it. They are amazing fish, and super smart, the only thing comparable to them for me is having a good dog!

Good Luck

Okay cool, if it's at work I'll just get one. I'll possibly consider 2 if I get permission to do it at home. One should be good though, that way he'll just get attached to me and love me lots :)

Another question, what could I put in with him to help clean up? I read on one site that Otocinclus (dunno how to spell it) are usually okay with dwarf puffers. What do you think? Would I even need anything?

Since you'll be the only cleanup module, perhaps just some cheap shrimp to eat leftovers, algae and to be puffer snacks.

Good idea. We'll see how messy they are, if it's a problem I'll get some shrimp or something.

I found a pet store in town that has pea puffers, and OMG are they ever cute! The tiniest little things! They have them marked as Golden Pea Puffers but I couldn't find anything online about that name specifically, so I think they might be making stuff up. They have them in brackish water too.. everyone saying they're supposed to be freshwater. Is it hard to transition them back to freshwater? A friend here at work got some puffers awhile back that were supposed to be brackish but the store had them in freshwater and she slowly (over about 18 hours) added salt to their water to transition them to brackish.. and they're doing great. Does that work the other way around too?

Cool that you want a puffer they are cool fish my wife has just set up a tank for her topaz puffer its real cool.
But not starting to make you look silly but you really need to sort your tanks out that you already have your stocking list couldnt be more like chalk and cheese if you had tried.

i agree with mark on what he says also the common plec will out grow a 55g i think. the koi need a pond of a few thousand g to grow properly.

cories need groups aswel.

i can't remember how big ID sharks get? too big for a 55g?

Would you like to come over to my house and see my fish? They're all living happily, acting completely normal and they're fine. They may not have 100% IDEAL conditions but come on, neither do their natural environments 100% of the time. I know everything you just pointed out (which was quite rudely posted in a thread that it had nothing to do with, would have been better addressed in a pm), and also think it's stupid to stereotype fish personalities. The bettas are fine with each other, one of the females has some fin shreddage from the pet store, as does the male.. but it's been growing back over the last few months.. no new shreddage AT ALL. I've never seen fish that happy. The koi are tiny, and only in a tank until I can find them a new home (I took them from a friend that needed to get rid of some).. they're also very happy, and growing back some scales they had lost in the pond. The Jack Dempsey was less than an inch long when I got him and was being beaten up in the JD tank at wal mart so I took him, but he was too small to put in the community tank so he's in the small tank for now until he grows up a bit (another couple weeks and he'll go in the community tank). When he outgrows the community tank he's currently in he'll either go in the tank with the Oscar (if they get along) or if they don't get along or the Oscar's outgrown that tank already I'll get a bigger one and either put them both in the big one or get the JD a buddy and put them in the tank the O's in now. Hmm what else did you complain about? Oh yea, the blue zebra cichlid.. he's the most passive fish in that tank, stays in his cave most of the time, doesn't bug anybody.. don't see that changing as I've had him for 6 months and he's been like that the entire time. The electric blue ahli is a bit of a jerk but doesn't hurt anybody. I'm slowly building up the foliage in the tank and he's becoming less of a jerk as I put more plants in. Both the lobsters are perfectly fine. The really blue one in the community tank has only shed his shell once that I've noticed, but he stayed under his rock and ate it and nobody's ever bugged him. The other one is quite large now, he's shed his shell a couple times that I've seen and again nobody's bothered him. He had one claw missing when I got him because he tried to eat a clam, but that's all grown back now and he tries to pinch the other fishes with it sometimes but he always misses because he's too slow. It's funny actually. Hmm what else was there.. oh yea the goldfish.. they were supposed to be food, and they survived somehow and are growing quite large (they'll probably go with the koi whenever I can find a pond for them), eating everything. If they die, they die.. that's what they were supposed to do anyways. I'm not concerned about their tank specifics. The irridescent sharks (which you strangely didn't mention, but I just noticed someone else did after you) are being re-homed soon. Somehow even though I researched them I managed to find all the misinformed sites that said they only get about 6 inches long. For now they're doing great though, they're quite small still, and very dark. Basically the only one I'm not sure about is the plecos... I know they get too big, and we'll probably end up bringing them back to the fish store when they do (they have a huge tank with a bunch of big plecos that people bring back).

Like I said above, you didn't say anything I didn't already know.. I KNOW I don't have ideal parameters for all fish in the tank, but they're all doing fine. They're growing, eating, playing, they all get along. I inspect my fish daily (several times a day) for any damage, strange behaviour, etc.. and if anything is ever unusual I take the fish back immediately. I've only had to take back one Oscar so far, I bought it to keep my other O company but the ahli kept chasing it into a corner (like I said, he's a bit of a jerk), so rather than risk anything happening to it I took it back. I would have had to upgrade too quick anyways having 2 Oscars, those buggers grow like weeds!

My offer still stands, anyone who would like to stop by and see how well my fish get along, you're more than welcome. Stay as long as you'd like, see for yourself, they're all happy and healthy.

I'm also surprised you didn't mention anything about the convicts. Don't you know they're apparently viciously aggressive? They actually just laid eggs for the 3rd time, they protect their corner but don't attack the other fish even if they come near.. just kind of chase them away. The other fishes get the point real quick.

That's all I have to say. I know my fish, you don't. It's rude to post stuff like this in people's threads that are completely unrelated. It looks as if you're just trying to show off your "fish knowledge." Keep it in a pm or keep it to yourself.

As i said to you before i wasnt being nasty just saying your fish stocking is completely wrong thought i would let you know as you may not of known they were not compatible as you dont know what you can keep in a 5g tank you may not of known those fish cant go together and ill stick to my words what you have set up is completely wrong i was trying to help you before things go wrong for you and you will be posting in the fish emergancy section so dont try starting an argument with me and also while im on the subject dont you think its extremely stressfull for the fish to keep takung them back research them first and set up a tank with fish that are compatible. I wasnt trying to put you down or be nasty i was stating facts that everyone on here will agree with so dont start getting all agressive.

I do research my fish first and like I said I've only had to bring back one fish.. and that one would have probably been fine too if it wasn't so small. It's growing happily at the fish store right now.

I didn't post this thread because I didn't know what could be put in a 5 gallon tank... I just thought people might have cool and unusual ideas for something different, or something I hadn't thought of. I was right, puffer fishes would be neat and different.

I'll be sure to let you know if anything happens with my fish, so you can have your "I told you so" moment, but until then, and I assure you it'll be a long while if not never.. please keep your opinions to yourself, or in a pm.. or in a thread it actually has something to do with, like one in the fish emergency section.

lol yeah i can see it now those koi swimming over to youe expressing just how happy they are in there heated 20g tank god who wants a 1000g coldwater pond when you could have a 20g heated tank for coldwater fish.
