ok, I had brought home two pretty young female bettas from walmart yesterday. they are in the 5 gallon, water treatment little bit of aquarium salt and a little melafix (very sick looking walmart bettas) and this morning I noticed they are very lethargic and still....checked the temp of the tank and it is at 60...the little 2-5 gallon heater is not working. the girls arnt staying with me forever, they are going to my sisters sor when healed up and healthy.

I have a spare 100 watt heater....it is adjustable....and I have a good thermostate in there...can I use the 100 watt and keep an eye on things to make sure they dont boil?

Yes as long as you set the temp right the heater will only keep the tank as hot as you set it the heater will be fine :good:

Ophelia and Juliet thank you very much for your prompt reply :)

make sure the heater has water covering it to the recommended level. They usually have a mark near the top. If they aren't under enough water they can overheat.
In an emergency situation you can put them in a little container (1-2gallon) on top of the fridge and it can help keep them warm.

I made sure the water level is perfectly matched to the heaters max min water level(I normaly do paralle on the bottem for easier water changes, but I want to be able to get at the adjuster knob very easy today in case I need to make any adjustments)

the fridge is a great idea, I was thinking of the heaters in my house, but nixed the idea when I realised they would get hot then cold then hot again.

Yes, temporarily.

From experience... i put a jewel 100w heater into a small 40 litre setup because it was spare. It heats the tank but any fluctuations in the room it seems to struggle with!
