Just got a gorgeous betta fishie in the mail. Looks nice and active, swimming about happily in his bag. My question is, how long do I need to acclimatise him for? Hes been floating on top for 20 mins now :)

Hi how long has he been in the mail?

I would personally leave him floating for about 45 - 60 mins. Start adding tank water after about 20-30 mins.

I assume he went in the mail sometime yesterday afternoon, i dont have a definite shipping time.

I shall add some tank water now, its been 30 mins, I have also been advised to let him get used to the temperature for an hour, so i will wait a bit longer before letting him explore :)

Bronzecat is spot on, float bag for 20-30 mins and then every 5 mins add a bit of tank water keep adding tank water until more tank water than what was in the bag and then after that release, he will be accustomed to the tank temp and water parameters. That's the way i would do it anyway.

Yep, that sounds good to me :good:
We had one through that, even though went to the wrong sorting office and took 48hrs to get here, was fine when released after an hour :good:

Thats one tough fish! The last little guy who got posted arrived an hour later than this guy, and sadly didnt make it :(

I would imagine there may have been an underlying problem or maybe handled a bit rough in transit :( They are quite tuff fish, with the Thai imports sometimes spending 4-5 days in their bags and box.

i think there was some misunderstanding, with the courier not knowing it was a fish :( Poor fishie.

Anyway new guy is out in his tank, looking gorgeous, and is very very purple :D (fins are a purple red wash with a deep purple body and a dark blue, extremely grumpy face!)

Now he needs a name!
