Hi,

I am thinking of getting a new tank to replace my rather small (40 litre) tropiquarium 55. The tank is to be situated in my fireplace
This is not as mental as it sounds! I have recently knocked out the fireplace in my chimney breast and plastered the hole up. See the picture from here

Now this little tank has provided me with a lot of fun but I want something a little bigger. The only problem is the space is 83 cm wide - so a 80 cm tank would probally look a bit cramped ( as opposed to the bit too small it looks now!) ) So liking the tropiquariums as I do and the fact it has not caused me any problems I was thinking of getting a tropiquarium 68 as this has all I need to get up and running, is 67cm wide, has a timer for the lights (I currently just leave them on for 10 - 12 hours a day) and holds nearly twice the amount of water - 70 litre.

phew, My question is, has anyone else had experience of this set up? Have they changed the bulbs for something more suitable for plants and if so what?

My thanks in advance.

Burns

I'd go for as big as i could fit in there. :)

If your going for a planted tank the troqiquariums arn't a good choice as the lighting is very limited (the 68 having only one tube)

our 88 is just too big at 850mm and even then its only got 2 24" tubes.

I'd go for a 30" tank in there with a 3 (or 4) tube hood.

Hi,

Thanks - the 66 has got 2 tubes (not sure of the size) and 30" would only leave just over 3cm either side - and this, I think, just not good. I want an 'all in one' set up where i get the tanks, lights, heater and filter, hence my preference for the 66.

Have you still got the stuck tubes in your 88? This may sound daft, but surley you can get different tubes in smaller sizes?? :S

Anyone?

Thanks

Here are the tanks that match width of what you seem to be looking for:

15 Gallon 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 12 3/4 21 170
20 High 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 16 3/4 25 225
25 Gallon 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 20 3/4 32 282
30 X-High 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 24 3/4 41 340

I found these here:

If you could squeeze a 30 1/4" in there, I would do that and then you go with a 37. ;)

Myself i'd just make the fire place into a tank, but thats just me.

Sounds like your ready to put water in to me :)

pop out and get some test kits (for Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte)

Make sure you have a read through the topics in the "new to the hobby" section about Cycling...

Don't go getting any fish in there until you have (ignore the fish shop if they tell you to add fish after a few days!)

Once you've read about cycling you can make your own decision about how to do it (with or without fish)

Make sure you test for the above chemicals in the water so you can see when its safe to add your next fish (when ammonia and nitrites are at zero)
