My father in law's tank has broke its seal (happened when they were out shopping today) they came home to find a floor drenched in water and many dead fish lying amongst the substrate in total he has lost 18 fish the only ones that have survived were a few Gourami, now the dilema is that my tank was only set up yesterday and obviously hasnt even begun its cycle but im afraid to say im going to have to at least try and house them as they sure stand a better chance than sitting in a bucket or worse again allowed to die like their tank mates, I have stole his filter media as he did not require it, i think he has really been disheartened and cant see him setting up again in the near future..

Currently my set up is as follows (But remember it is as new as a new thing):

Trigon 350
Fluval 405
Hydor 400w Heater
PH: 7.5
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Temp is a steady 27°

I know this goes totally against the grain but with no other options what should i do?

to be honest with you i set my tank up and let it settle for 3 days and stsrted stocking at a high rate mistake(may be) any way i have only ever had 1 fish die and that was a neon and has had many baby fish mollies, guppies etc. any way thatr was 8 months ago so i wouls say go for it as you said they have a better chance in a tank then a bucket.

Aaawwwwh thats a shame-well all you can do i think is keep doing partial water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite down for a temporary measure.... so sorry :/

Fingers crossed im just waiting on the water to clear as its still murky (i think its off the gravel and first layer mix) i have placed a small heater in the large bucket with an airstone for the time being, if it doesnt clear soon im just going to have to let the fish take their chances in it with the murky water (they seem very healthy at the moment).

I would add them to your tank, there are members on here who give mature bacteria sponges to fishkeepers.
There not going to do well in a bucket, could add them to your tank and then see if an lfs will save them for you while your tank cycles.

depends how long your dads filter has been off for, it it were ok i would move his filter into your tank, and in very short order your tank would be fully cycled. when your sure its ok pop your filter in and leave them both running together, (its not really possible to over filter. IMO) after a few weeks you could transfer your dads fish and filter back, and you would have a ready cycled tank!!!!! But this all depends on how long the bacteria has been without air, and dry!!!!!!

If you have taken the filter media, have you put it into your filter in your tank and do you have it running? If so the bacteria will only survive if a) it didn't dry out in your fathers tank from when the water leaked out until you got it home and B) it needs ammonia to feed from. If I was you I would put the fish in the tank with the filter running and heater. Get a good test kit and check your water. At the first sign of any ammonia or nitrite rise you will have to do water changes. Fingers crossed there is some bacteria left in the media.

Other than that check out the link on my sig and see if there is anyone near you that could donate some mature media. Please pm me if you want me to help in that direction. Good luck. :)

You owe me nothing....it is a pleasure to help :) Let's hope smurfys media does the biz.
