But surely if you can use old tank water and possibly not kill any/less bacteria then that is BETTER practice? I doubt all the experienced fish keepers on this site would do it this way of it wasn't the best way to do it?

Just because they publish a figure on their website doesn't mean it's correct. If it's an average then some days it could be higher than others so not exactly brilliant is it...

yeah, but whose to say there isnt a giant chlorine monster between the water board, and my house?!?

Also, averages, like you say. Because they couldn't possibly know exactly how much chlorine is in what water, and where.
So as a general rule on here, its don't wash them out in tap water.

It's like washing a spud before you cook it.
Probably not going to kill you if you don't, but do you really want to run the risk?!

What I meant by bad practice is that washing your sponges in tap water is bad practice, I'm not condoning it in anyway as before, but someone previously posted that washing them in tap water will kill all of the bacteria, that is not true, that is the point I'm making, no other.

I think you will find i said "kill bacteria in the filter", that doesnt mean all of it, that means it will kill bacteria.
So your point is invalid, sorry!

What test kit are you using to get a reading of 0-0.6? or do you mean that it is between these two values?

I have NO IDEA why he rinced the sponges out IN the tank lol! You can only imagine how much crap I had in the gravel I had to clear out . If only I'd took a picture, it was out of control!

What would the purpose of cleaning the filter IN the tank be in the first place? It would just get stuck in the filter again for the next time, or worse, get stuck in the substrate and poison the fish! That is some messed up logic right there!

Hey no worries . Yes it's inbetween those two values. The colour isn't quite 0.6, that's why I say from 0 to 0.6 so let's just say 0.3? haha.

I have no idea what so ever lol. That's why the tank water, gravle and filter was in such state! That's why I gave it a good clean out trying not to remove good bactira from the filter.

I think it should be fine I'll just keep an eye on the ammonia

Just do bi-daily 50% water changes to mop up the small amounts of excess ammonia, the filter should catch up within a few days.

I changed some of the water yesterday, along with closing down one of my old tanks that I've had roughly 2 years running with no problems. I took the sponges out the filter and poped them in the new setup along with the sponges that are already in there. There was more thaan enough room for the sponges I added out the old tank.

Tested the water this morning Ammonia showing as 0. Will keep my eye on it for a week, if all is well I will remove all the current stock next week and re-stock!

Thinking of Kribs? Wouldn't mind trying to breed a few differnt styles of fish... apart from guppy, mollie etc.

Kribs are a goer for sure mate, really easy to breed, even if in a community tank. You could try a relation to the Kribensis which is the Pelvicachromis Taeniatus - Nigerian Red. Very interesting little fishies and just a bit different to the normal krib. They have cracking red markings. I was so tempted by these but ialready had my Kribensis pair so didn't bother. That and the fact that they were £22 a pair!
