hi there

i have community tank which i am in the process of stocking . i have a male betta in the tank who is getting on just fine id like to know how many femeales i need to put in with him also id like to know if i can keep killifish in with him.

males will attack females unless you have a big enought tank about 60l 1 male to 4-6 females with lots of hidding places, so add some plants and caves for females to hide in.

im sorry i forgot to say i have a 55 gallon tank that is fully cycled and is very well planted

Bettas dont normally like anything above 20gal. Will this setup have any other fish? If yes then i wouldnt put a betta in there. Get him a 60l tank like shang hi said and put about 4 females in.

yay i was right!
55 gallon is better suited to a comunity tank, the bettas will be happyer in a 20 gallon (i know it sounds weird, as every one says the bigger the tank the better it is for the fish) but bettas are naturaly in shallow streams and will take comfort in the "small" space that that produces.

but make sure it has caves and some plants for the females to hide in, also the pllants add a bit intrest for you as well as the fish.

if you want a natural scape for bettas then you should have sandy/gravely substerte, with some rocks and small plants, and shallow water of about 20cm deep, but then to have 20 gallons of that you will need like a 4 foot tank, so they will be happy in a normal sized tank
