I've gotten a new 55 gallon tank (heating, lighting, filtration, decor, the whole shebang); once it's cycled, I'd like to make it an African Cichlid community tank. Does anybody have any ideas for a good combination of (relatively common) African cichlids? And how many of them should I have?

Another good combo that people often get is Labidochromis Careleus(sp.) or yellow labs and Blue Peacocks. :D Both are pretty common.

Labs and peacocks would be beautiful together...but how many of them do I get?

It's really up to you how many. I'd go with a trio of Aulonocara and about 8 Caeruleus.

Another really stunning mix is the Lab Caeruleus and Pseudo. Acei - about 6 of each. In this tank you still have the option of adding a male Aulonocara centerpiece.

This 'German Red' would contrast well. Aulonocara is just the real name for a Peacock.
