Need A Bit Of Advice Please

Yesterday my son bought a little 28ltr aqua one tank. He's facinated with amano shrimps and only wants it to keep these and maybe 4/6 tiny tetras. An internal filter came with it but it only has a black sponge that fills the filter. My question is, is this the best filter pad to use? Does he need to get a different type of sponge? I can advise him about cycled and water stats but no nothing about this filter, so any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

I realise that I could cycle his tank quicker by putting in some of my 'established' filter but he wants to start from scratch and learn by doing his own 'fishless' cycle.

Your son bought a little tank and only wants to keep a few little fish in it while doing his own fishless cycle - sounds like he's very responsible. As far as the filter goes, the only thing you need is something with a decent amount of surface area that water moves through - chances are the one that came with the tank will work just fine.

The filter sounds similar to the one I have in my 25 ltr Rena tank. I've had it running for about six months with a few small fish and have had no problems, so seems it is adequate as long as you don't overstock.

Thank you for the kind comments about my son, he is a good lad so sorry I cant post him too you. Think I'll keep him for now! At least now he knows the filter will be ok. Thanks a lot. Told him to join this wonderful site if he needs any more advice.
