...i think :fun:

As some of you may know i have a new 75 gallon tank. My initial plan was to have Discus because my tap waters PH is low but while doing reserch i found tanganyika cichlids and couldnt decide between them, i eventuly decided discus but still havent bought anything for the tank and last night i think i changed my mind again when i was looking at mbuna tanks.

So now i have to decide between mbuna or tangs (or discus still)

i have made two stock lists of fish i want:

Tanganyika setup
Julidochromis Marlieri
Neolamprologus Pulcher
altolamprologus calvus
Xenotilapia bathyphilus
cyprichromis leptosoma
paracyprichromis nigripinnis
Ophthalmotilapia ventralis

Mbuna setup
Pseudotropheus Ndumbi
Labidochromis Caeruleus
Aulonocara Malauna
Metriaclima greshakei
metriaclima callainos
Cynoyilapia afra jalo
zebra chilumba
Metriaclima Aurora

Not done much/any research in too some of the fish but these are ones i like, what do you think?
Thanks
Lloyd

Can`t really help on the Mbuna list I`m afraid but on the Tang list you`ve chosen some nice, peaceful, community ones...apart from the pulcher. The pulcher are known to be aggressive towards other tankmates and considering the others are a peaceful mix it would be a shame to ruin their 'harmony' with just one fish, believe me as I made the same mistake with a brichardi....all because it looked nice

kiriyama, bullit and doresy will hopefully be able to give you some more info/opinions on them ;)

Back with more later but I agree, forget the Neolamprologus Pulcher. When I had a breeding pair it was hell. Lost the female and now the male has periods of disruption and I shall be removing him soon.

I would go the Discus route

The Discus are nice to look at but I'll put a bet on you'll get bored quick

Tangs exhibit some really ineteresting behaviour , really worth seeing :good:

Hi thanks for the help.

thats whats putting me off discus i think they look really nice but have heard they are a little inactive.
That why i thought about mbuna because they look colourfull but are more interesting.
What changes whould you make to my stock list?
Thanks
Lloyd

im only just starting in malawis myself , so im not even going to try and advise you on mbuna stocking , but id just like to add you will deffinately get bored of discus. having kept both malawis win hands down . even more striking colours and a very active tank .

Hi mark, i really like you mbuna tank, how are you finding them?

Do you have any opinions on tangs vs mbuna?
Thanks
Lloyd

hi lloyd

thanks . the only mbuna in my tank are the yellow labs , the rest are peacocks/haps . i cant really comment on tangs . ive never kept them and tbh i know nothing about them sorry i cant really help you there .

I always thought that peacocks/haps were mbuna?? :S
Are peacocks/haps less aggressive? and can they be mixed in the same tank with mbuna?
Thanks
Lloyd

I believe that haps are Mbuna, the haps and labs can be mixed with Malawi as they`re known to be less aggressive than most of the Mbuna, they apparently fit well into a Malawi community without the need for over stocking to keep any aggression down.........I think that`s how it goes anyway

theres a pinned thread above all about mbuna , its well worth a read if youre considering an mbuna tank . peackocks are pretty peacefull in comparison and because of this are much easier to mix than mbuna . the yellow labs i can get away with as theyre pretty mellow really , plus they inhabit the rocks , where as the peacocks are more often in the open water so there no real territory conflict .

Haps are not Mbuna.

Mbuna are a group of Malawi Cichlids that inhabit rocky areas. They swim among the rocks and do not venture out into open water much. Because their small territory is where they feed and breed, they are very aggressive in their defense thereof.

Haps or Haplochromis are more open swimming, though still occur near rocks. But because they do not graze their rocks for algae, are less territorial and therefore less aggressive.

Aulonocara or "peacocks" are also less tied to the rock areas, feeding on small invertebrates in the sand. These are the least aggressive.

Oh well, looks like I got it wrong   You learn something new every day B-)

Just ignore me in future ;)
