i was just looking at some balas at a local LFS (petsmart) there were about 5 of them in the tank, they were all missing scales and appeared to be bleeding! one was folded over like a taco and laying on the bottom gasping for air. i told the girl working the fish counter and she said "yeah hes been dying for a while, we're waiting for him to kick the bucket." WTF

I'm not even going to bother to comment on that - some of these LFSs are disgusting...

Seriosuly though, the horror stories I have heard (and witnessed) are endless. It's a great shame but there isn't all that much we can do.

let's not play this game, ok? there's another thread already in existence for "worst thing in an LFS". anybody who's just dying to tell their story should add on to the existing thread.

I will add even further that and I am sure we have all heard the stories in the past of a group of people being sued for naming and then bad mouthing LFS/LPS I am just going to warn you guys that much.

People should stop being afraid of the litigation monster. Here in the USA we used to live in a capitalist society. For those of us who dont understand what this is, the capitalist system works because its fundemental concept is that the business is held accountable by the consumers. Unfortunately we now live in a corporatist society where the reverse is true. The consumers are now exploited and harassed by business. People need to start standing up for themselves.

I by no means attempt to pass myself off as an expert. However, I do know more than the average lfs associate and I am always looking to expand the scope of my knowledge. I can tell you from personal experience that the slovenly state of certain lfs are mainly due to the ownership. This is always the case when the company is owned by a corporation. For example; The corporation decides who takes care of the fish, so when you see an associate who doesnt know what theyre talking about, its because the company decided theyll make more proffit if they pay less to an idiot to man their store.

But what about when the associate is knowledgable and concerned for the fish, but the store is still slovenly? This comes down simply to the amount hours and associates that the company dedicates to the aquatic maintenance and care. If the associates are constantly tending to other duties dictated by the company, or if there arent enough associates designated to care for the aquatic life, or if there arent enough hours alloted to the associates caring for the aquatic life then the lfs will be a mess no matter how knowledgable and dedicated the associates are. What we need to do is start holding business accountable. One thing that most of us are already doing is refusing to shop at certain stores. The other thing we need to do is the good old word of mouth. If I'm standing in front of a store that I don't like, I'm not afraid to let other's know it and why.

I don't understand why it bothers people on here if we talk about this subject. If you don't want to hear about it, don't look at the thread in the first place. If you are worried about getting sued, don't mention names or don't post.

I personaly agree with Boxcar Muzzdogg - particularly concerning word of mouth. Most beginners have no idea about how misleading or even cruel many LFSs are and it helps to post things like this to make it clear. Plus it encourages people to take a stand and to try to do something about what's going on. And you can't argue that there are no threads complimenting LFSs - I have read many on here about how nice the local fish store is or how much its improved etc and that also encourages people to give their LFS feedback and let them know when they are happy with what has been done or changed to encourage the lFSs to improve further.

Still, I understand that some people may not feel like posting their worst experiences over and over again :p Me included. This is a completely different matter though and, as I haven't participated much in similar threads, I'll make an exception this time...

I think the most memorable (though not the worst) thing I have witnessed was a tinfoil barb with a very serious case of fungus. The fungus went all around its tail base so that it looked like the tail was no longer attached to the body. It also was fungused around the gill area. The fish was actualy still very active and was about 8" - it also happened to be in what was barely over a 20 gallon. 30 at most. The same day I tried to have a couple of male opaline gouramies mvoed because they were fighting. The employee refused - claiming they'd 'eat the small fish' if moved into a tank with some cories and white clouds. Realy he just couldn't be bothered to catch one. Then there's all the plecs I've seen - floating at the surface, upside down. For some reason, large, dead plecs realy get to me. Listening to LFS employees suggesting 8 goldfish for a 2 gallon, uncycled, unfiltered, newly-purchased bowl also is rather annoying ( a bit of an udnerstatement there). It's even more frustrating when the customer refuses to listen when you try to explain about how cruel doing that would be. I have sinse started typing up a realy detailed guide on caring for goldfish and all the myths. Once it's done, I plan to stand outside this LFS and use it to discourage customers from buying those poor fish. Incompatible fish being bought to be put in teh same tank or in the wrong size tank (3 kissing gouramies for a 10 gallon!) also bothers me and it's even worse when youc an see the employee isn't going to say a word about it. Oh but the most cruel thing has to be dyed fish - for obvious reasons. They are undoubtedly the fish that go through the most suffering - even before they are exposed to disease and bad stocking in an LFS or after being purchased.

as far as decent fish i only trust petsmart....i very rarely see any sick or dying finsh there...petco- usauly i find dying fish and several tanks with very advanced cases of ich....walmart....every tank i look at always has atleast one sick or dying finsh...lots of ich too...as far as the advice i get from petsmart(though usaully right) i never go on that alone without consulting some other place....i really want to check out this new place called neptunes realm....maybe on sat

Wal*Mart is the worst lfs I have but I usually go to petco
I've gone to petco on occasion.
I've found their prices cheap (yeh)
however the conditions sometimes are horrid.

I have one LFS that I really prefer I trust them.

but petco is havine a 20% discount on tetras and I think my tanks are calling for some black neons.

I guess I'm lucky. I have numerous Aquarium only stores within 30 minutes of my house so I don't have to go to Walmart, Petsmart or Petco for my fish purchases. I've also found that belonging to a fish club opens lot's of doors to purchasing fish from breeders.

didnt see the other thread or i would have just contributed there.

im new and im certainly glad someone brought some of these issues to light

The fish stores are in it for the money anyway, there are little fish stores that are one hundred percent dedicated and actually care about the fish.

I don't think its fair to list a whole company name like walmart or petco as terible, as there are very good ones out there and everytime you degrade walmart itself it only discourages the good ones from even trying to make an effort or to stop people from visiting the whole chain lfs itself when there are good ones that deserve to be visited.
Far more useful is to actually list which walmart you went to that was bad and the town it was in.

My lfs that i go to isn't fantastic by any means but is the only one in the whole town, they've done alot of bad things although the owner hasn't owned the place for very long and was a total newb to fish keeping when he bought the place and he does listen to what i say, although even so i have seen some horror storys there....

walked into my LPS today. they had a 180 set up with some BIG ID sharks a pictus, a few cories and angels and 1 discus. the only problem is that the discus only had 1 eye. my mom asked teh lady at the counter about it and she goes " oh yeah. its got another one" and then she laughs. needless to say i left empty handed.
