Nano Tank

hi , i may be setting up a juwel 96 as a nano tank, and was just wondering what lighting I would need? I will not be keeping any corals that need lots of light and not many corals in general.Thanks

Theirs a chap on ebay selling nice halides at the moment. For that size tank with lower light requirements I would choose his single 150w version with twin actinics built in suspended above.

cant go wrong with halides...although I tend to be a PC man myself. You can get some reasonably cheap ones online. Although, not being from over there, I thought the jewels had hoods already? can you retrofit it, because if you can the retro kits are cheap.

I think it would help you to know that I am a lighting NOOB, I literally don't know anything about lighting so a link to info/prices would be really helpful.

well depending on what you want to keep you have lots of choices.

A)This PC (powercompact) hood is ok for softies, and is cheap, and effiecent.

It also depends on the depth of your tank, thats roughly 2.5-3 watts a gallon.

B)Next up in the PC range would be one of these. Ok for softies, some SPS, and LPS.

that one, once again depending on depth, more than enough to keep most anything. almost 6 watts a gallon if you get the 2x96 watt bulbs. Comes with lunar lights as well.

I have the 400 watt 36" (well 384 but whos counting ) orbit for my new 55 gallon tank. It should be sufficent to keep just about anything you can buy in the trade (just about, there may be some exceptions)

C) Option 3 is Metal Halides. I dont know alot about halides because I have never used them. Although I know that some people simply swear by them, esp if you want LPS and SPS hard corals.

When I first jumped from fresh into salt water I was almost overwhelmed by the vastness of the stuff you need to know and figure out to get going.

Try picking up the Concientious Marine Aquariust by Robert Fenner, or The simple guide to marine aquariums by Kurtz. Both were big helps.

those replace the hood. You would buy a glass or acrylic cover, and then the light mounts on top of that.

the halide pendants hang from the ceiling, or from a hanger on the wall, they are good lights, but generate lots of waste heat. You should ebay for the book, the simple guide to marine aquairums by jeffrey kurtz
