Ok so i went to LFS a week after geting the tank setup and saw some shark looking fish which looked really kool theyre about 2 inches long so brought 2 the guy at the shop said they are proberbly only going to grow to about 12-15cm long each . So i carried on round the fish shop found some i liked the look of asked the guy if they would all get on and if theyre hard fish .

Now i''ve got them home i thought id try to find out what they are , ive looked through the fish species bit which identified the following

Siamese fighter fish which i got one off.
1 rainbow fish http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=89827 < looks like that
2 angel fish which are only tiny

the rest i'm not to sure of what they are , just thought i'd find out so i can plan ahead for the tank size increase / moving tanks or giving to friend with a big enough tank .

I have the following i cant identify:
one of these

i have a few of these which look simlar to one of the fish just the colours dont match

I have a pair of these, the guy in the shop said the fins grow back( just they nipple at each other when they were delivered)

And last but least the shark catfish thingy, got a pair of them and theyre a nightmare trying to take a picture of as they never stay still

also is there anything that eats the aglae well? i had 3 snails at the begining of the week only one left , the fish must like them....

Should of done this all before getting the fish but all learn from mistakes.

Sorry if this is the wrong place.

Cheers

Ben

The first two are Platies, the third is a Kissing Gourami and the catfish is a Columbian Shark.

The Gourami looks like he may have a touch of fin rot. you should up the number of Rainbows to at least three as they are a shoaling fish. As for algae eating fish, we'd have to know the size of the tank.

Am I right in thinking that the tank has only been set up for a week?

Your fish could be in serious trouble if the tank is uncycled...

Thanks for the quick reply, with the Kising Gourami the fish shop said the other fish bit at it in transport thats why its looking like that the other one i have is kinda simlar with bits of the fin missing . Ive got two tanks , a little one which is about 20littres and 55littre tank which has most of the fish in . Need to move the fish about just awaiting another tank as its abit crowded.

also any idea how big the shark ( is it catfish or shark or crossbred),gourami and the plati's grow?

and yeh the tank has been up and running since around the 18/19 got the fish a couple of days ago .

Is that a columbian shark? Omg! I love those guys.

They'll grow huge, just to tell you and they can get aggressive.

.__.

The Gourami will get up to 12" long, Platies usually max out at 2-3 inches, and the Colombian Shark can grow to 12-14". Just leaving the tank up and running for a week or two is not enough. Without any waste (ammonia) in the tank the bacteria needed to maintain your biological filtration cannot establish itself. Here are a couple of links that you should check out before you decide how you should proceed:

oooo , asked them if how long to leave everything for .... loosing faith in the fish shop , no where round here does fish apart from a little shop and pets at home(all of there fish were in quarateen tanks).

Will go and read the links

EDIT

Will get on with water changes then , ive got around20-25% water already setup as i was going to do it tomorrow anyways. I'll go and get a testing kit when i get in from work tomorrow.

How long has your other tank been set up? Would it be possible to borrow some filter media from the older tank? Either way, you will need to re-home some of the fish right away or get you a much larger tank. The two Angels alone need a minimum of 75 Liters...

The other tank is around the same time as it has recently come from a cold water setup so im guessing the filter would be no good? I'll Re-home the Angel fish at friends tank , pointless taking them back to shop as they were in smaller tanks than mine with more of them in so will only be overcrowded there.

Just to mention the columbian shark will need brackish water later in life. Probably best to return it, if you like 'shark' like fish then there are other alternatives that are freshwater. Ruby sharks are good, less aggressive I've found than red tail sharks but still boisterous.

The sharks are cool but it wasnt just because they were sharks i just wanted something differnt really . alot of stuff kinda looks more normal. Shame you cant get siamese fighter fish to get on that would be one colourful tank if you could.
