Name Of Chemical I Can 'clean' New Plants With?

Hi! I hope somebody can help me. I heard there is a chemical I could buy from a normal chemist/pharmacist, that kills the bacteria in new plants, without killing the plants themselves. This chemical is strong enough also to kill snail eggs etc, that may be hidden in new bought plants. Apparently one just needs to rinse the new plants in this chemical quickly, and the wash the plant properly with water before putting it in the tank. Does anybody know what this could be?
