Mystery Snails

For what ever reason...when ever i buy mystery snails they die maybe with in two months after getting them. This time around all three seemed to die in one day and that was it.

I was feeding them vegetables and they seemed to be doing well. Just wondering because maybe they are too sensitive ? I don't know...I was kind of disappointed because they were nice colours that I found. A purple, two light blue ones and a yellow one(that was common i know).

One of mine escaped/committed suicide yesterday because I forgot to close the lid. Found it on the floor. It seemed intact at the time, but an hour later found a hole in the shell and tiny bit of flesh poking out, and the "door" firmly shut.

I don't know what to suggest. I guess you are actively feeding it, water parameter and temp ok and you haven't used copper sulphate containing medicine in the recent past.

What is your set up size, water stats etc?

I've never had luck with them. most of the ones i got lasted MAYBE a month. there was one i had that made it about three months or so with evidence of growth, but died suddenly. Guess were in the same boat! I'd like to know myself

I'll have to get back to you on that...I will do a stat check tomorrow.

Maybe that is why they are called mystery snails. It is a mystery when they just die suddenly.

It might be that my water is too hard for the snails? I have well water.

What is your set up size, water stats etc?

I finally have done the water chem...and it is as following:

Ammonia = 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 40ppm
PH: 8.0

KH took 10 drops to change colours

and GH it took 16 drops to change colours


I'm guessing maybe the PH is too high for them?


my set up is a 55 gallon, planted about maybe 75% of it, with sand as the substrate. (play sand)

I added CO2 to the tank recently maybe this could have caused their deaths?
