The other week I did some big clean ups in a couple of my tanks and the excess weed I I dumped in a tub to be dealt with later, mainly to rescue any hitch hiker baby notopala snails. The other day I finally removed the bulk of the weed, but left all the fine greenie to still go through to look for the snails, and dumped the whole lot water and weed into a spare tank. This evening I happened to glance into the tank of water and saw some faint movement at the surface of the water. At first I assumed Mozzie wrigglers, but had a closer look and spied 2 tiny little fry. Considering the tanks that these fry could have come from I think I have narrowed down the potential parents to any of the following.
Angel Fish- Not very likely but the adult pair could have laid some sneaky eggs at some point in the tank I did a massive cleanup in.
Rainbow fish- possibly but more likely to be a local variety over my Dwarf Neons or Pygmy Rainbows
Threadfins- possible
Pacific Blue Eyes- possible but I have seen no sparring breeding activity
Spotted Blue Eyes- Highly likely because these guys are constantly producing a few babies.
Now I just need these fry to grow up so I can finally tell just who they are and put them back in the appropriate tank.

Ill help you out in spotting one of the fry

looking at the size of the fry I am tempted to say Threadfin because they are much smaller than newly hatch Spotted Blue Eyes.

oh I remember this well ... I went through the same thing last year. I had this tiny little fry turn up and had no clue what it was. At first I thought it was a cory, then I thought a harlequin but it turned out to be a little tetra. I remember the excitement well. Good luck with them and I'd love to know what they turn out to be :)

At least I know I can rule out them being Corydoras, nearly any of the loaches and definantly not Bristlenoses or Whiptail catfish. I thught of one other rainbow they could be, and that the desert rainbows because I have seen the male in that tank displaying and patrolling and guarding one particular area of tank/weed

Some more pictures of the mystery fry, the powder on the surface is first starter fry food. I am leaning towards these being one of the types of Blue Eye I keep.

In the above photos the fry are around 3/4 days old

I think I have nailed down the mystery fry to being Pacific Blue Eyes, I was having a close look in the Pacific Blue Eye tank moving around the floating weed and spied another tiny fry.
So hopefully it looks like I have at least 3 Pacific Blue Eye babies
