Hi guys

I lost a Zebra Danio a couple of days ago and dont know why:-(

Did my usual 30% water change last monday and all was well - water stats all normal. Did the usual amount of feed early on friday morning and went off to a wedding. Sat morning went to the tank to do the usual daily feed and check and one of my male zebra danios looked in a sorry sate, swimming slowly and bright red streaks on his lower belly.

Fished him out and put him in my quarantine tank and dosed with Esha 2000 but he was dead next morning. From looking it up seems to be septicemia that was the cause - no other symptoms apart from this redness?

In the main tank I tested the water when I had fished the poor little guy out - all stats fine! I did an immediate 30% water change. I have not added anything to the main tank as I have 3 x amano shrimp.

Ammonia 0

Nitrites 0

Nitrate 20

PH 7.6

I have ordered Interpet No.9 Anti Internal Bacteria Aquarium Treatment just incase anyone else shows signs but so far all seems fine. I am at a loss to know why this has happened? Should I do anything else?

Bacterial infections in established tanks are often associated with poor water quality, dirty gravel & badly maintained filters. Make sure you do a gravel clean whenever you do a partial water change. Clean power filters about once a month even if it looks clean. Clean gravel and filters means there is less gunk to encourage disease outbreaks. And the tank water will remain cleaner (have less bugs in it) because it will be passing through a clean filter.
In the meantime just monitor the tank and if any other fish show similar symptoms then treat the tank. Be careful with the shrimp.
