I bought some hydroponics type mylar off ebay to line the inside of some of my tank hoods to increase light - well the package arrived today and it's got "we are not responsible for any illegal uses of this product" stickered all over it and the logo is 'Other insulation may send you to jail'.

Just what on earth have I bought?

I guess I don't get out enough cos I can't think what on earth anyone would use this stuff for?!?!?!?!

It is used in hydroponics as a reflector and insulator, and therefore some use it for growing weed!

It's a very good reflector of heat and light, I've bought some off Ebay to also line my hood with ;)

>>> does mylar reflect 100% or most of the light that hits it?

Mylar, by itself, is transparent and reflects almost nothing. What is sold and used for reflectors is Aluminised Mylar, which is an extremely efficient reflector, and easy to work with. Nothing is 100% effective, but Aluminised Mylar is ~99%.

Of course, it is necessary to keep it clean. Water splashes and salts will effect it's performance.

i've just lined my hood with it. make sure you watch your temp. i now have the heater on the lowest setting as my lights keep the water at 26 degrees (mylar reflects heat as well as light). before adjusting it shot up to 30.

the mylar not only increses the efficincy of lighting systems by reflecting light but alsoenablesgrowers to evade detection by helecopters with infrared cameras.

Honest officer that strange light coming from my windows, friends calling me a 'reefer' and my abnormally high electricty usage is all because I have a fish tank...
