i cant get my water levels right. i have had my tank 3 months, i did the fishless cycle, i have about twelve little fish my ammonia as never been 0 it as always been 0.25 ppm. i have been following the advice from my local aquaruim shop. to sort out my ammonia they told me to put another filter in my tank so i have two running now they are the corner filters. i got told to put zoelite in one of the filters so i did. i have had the new filter running for a month now, and the other filter 3 months, i keep getting told so many different things to do that it as got very confusing. my tank is a 90 litre (20 gallons) i have been doing 10% water changes and testing my water, as my ammonia shot up to 8 ppm and stayed there for about 2 weeks, when i put the new filter in the tank. all my fish seem to be doing fine my water test results
27th of march
ph 7.4
ammonia 4.0 ppm
nitrite 0 ppm
nitrate 20/40 ppm

3rd of april
ph 7.4

nitrite 0 ppm
nitrate 20/40

6th of april

looks like you are no in a mini cycle which is now a fish in cycle i suggest water changes before you fish suffer long term damage/death.

take a look at the fish in cycle in the resource centre

Weird For Your Tank not to Have cycled yet after three months ! But yeah, sounds like your in a mini cycle now. Abut your Ammonia Never being dropping below .25 have you checked your tap mines constantly at .25-.50 I use prime For water changes which says it treats for Ammonia works Wonders for me since I got it. Defiantly Keep up with those water changes with Levels Like That though, For the Safety of your fish.

thankyou for your help. would it harm my tank if there was a power cut in my area and the electric was out for approx 4 hours if so does that mean it will start cycling all over again.

i set up another tank with my son the same day and as got the fish and he doesnt have any problems. i dont know were i gone wrong, i have not losted any fish what so ever.

You will not lose many bacteria at all in a 4-hour power cut. Just ensure that the filter media stays submerged in tank water (not hard if you have internal filters, but some people have biowheels out in the air or HOB's where the siphon might reverse the filter water into the tank, so they have to watch out for power outages possibly causing more harm.)
