You need to get a good liquid master test kit (don't get strips as they are inaccurate and the 5 in 1 strips don't test ammonia). Ammonia and nitrite are very toxic and if left unchecked will kill your fish. Eventually, there will be bacteria present to process them and solve the problem but it takes time for the bacteria to develop. In the mean time, you have to do partial water changes as needed to keep them as low as possible. In a properly cycled tank, ammonia and nitrite will always be 0. Most likely, yours are both well over 2 ppm which is causing your problems.
The API kit seems to be the most popular among members here. It will run about $25 in stores like Petsmart or Petco. Foster and Smith currently hae them on sale for $15.19 here. If you print out the web page from Petsmart.com and take it to Petsmart, they will honor the online pricing but you will probably have to get manager to do it.

i use a lemonade bottle to extract water out its well cleaned out water water do i put into the tank cold water or lukewarm water.? itake to bottles oput and replace wit 2 bottles ..
I usually mix hot and cold water to get it close to the same temperature as the tank. Just let the water run about 30 seconds to a minute before filling your buckets.

It's not the filter. In fact, you've probably made the situation worse by changing to a smaller filter- it means you must have a much lower stocking rate than with the filter you had before.
