hello everyone im havin trouble with my new tank. i bought a new filter fluval plus 2 and my fish are gettin sucked in to it and gettin kllled (probably the filter is to big for my tank:( .
now this morning when i woke up 6 of my fish have died and another couple seem to be dieing on to too.
wot are the right settings for this filter cos ive no idea wot they are meant to be could some one help me out here that has the same filter as me i dodnt want to buy and more fish for them to die

my tank is a 2 foot one ...

thanks for reading this ...
regards colin...

Try turning the flow down with the little blue lever on the front of the filter. What fish have been sucked in and how big were they?

Matt

just a thought but wouldnt a cut up net, tied to the end with an elastic band not work? or would the fish just bite it off?

The easiest way to do it is just turn the filter flow down a bit. That is another option if the flow is down as far as it goes and your fish are still being sucked in. It happened to a couple of my endler fry, the rest were fine after I turned the flow down.

It will be worth it when your tank is settled! Have you turned the flow down yet?

Matt

Lol, cool. Just make sure that the filter has bacteria established in it.

Urm... There's no way a Fluval 2+ is too powerful- it's the right size, or even too small depending on your stocking. It seems to me that the fish are sucken up by the filter after death- you say it's a new tank, so I'm betting water quality issues.

I agree with feeshy I have a fluval 2plus in my 2ft tank. Its the correct size filter for your tank but mine is nowhere near powerful enough to suck up anything other than fry. Good luck with your tank I would leave the fluval 2 in.

ive got the other filter in now ill report back in while to let use no hows its going.....
want to says thanks to everyone who helped me out here with my problems thanks alot.....

ive turn the filter down last nite this morning ive 2 neons all is good so far :)
ill see if they make it to the ned of the week and maybe get some more fish into the tank
how many more fish can i ut in at a time?

Did you fishless cycle your tank before adding your fish?

Or have you left your tank set up for about a week, added some sort of bacterial growth product to your water, then added the fish you mentioned above?

:good:

As a general rule, the only way fish get pulled into the filter is when they are weak and sick. There is definitely not enough suction there to pull in a healthy fish. You didn't give all the dimensions of your tank but I assume it's at least 15 gallon (smallest 2' tank I'm aware of) and the filter is rated at about 105 gph. That's only about 7 times the tank capacity per hour so definitely not too much.

I also believe that you may have ammonia and nitrite issues. What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH?
