I have a (brand new, just added the plants and fish today) 10 gallon tank. in it i have

one male king cobra guppy
two female king cobra guppies
four sparkling gouramis
two cory cats
three neon tetras
three glowlight tetras

plant-wise, i'm not quite sure of what i have, my friend mail ordered them from a site and he put them in one of his tanks until he came over and he said he just grabbed some things. i think he said

baby tears
corkscrew val
stargrass
and i bought a large fake plant today since both female guppies are pregnant.

good stock or no?
i'll post some pictures soon

Neon tetras like to be kept in groups of 6 or more and the glowlights are probably the same. Don't see a problem with your guppies as it's best to have more females than males. As for Sparkling Gouramis, I'm sorry but I don't know. Hope someone else can help you out there. ;)

thanks much =]. my friend said both the tetras should school together so i really didn't think of getting a large group of either one, i figured if they did school together, it would be a good size.

Do the tetras school together? If not, get rid of one or the other and get six of the remaining tetra. It'll look much better and your fish will be happier.

I am pretty sure that the tetras will school together and even if they dont, depending on your fish you can have just the amount you have because i have one neon tetra becuase it was the only one in the tank so i went ahead and bought him and let him have a new home with some guppies and one black skirt tetra! Well let us know and i can not wait to see pictures of your tank!

Thanks again and good luck!

hmm...how would the gouramis be a problem? they're quite small...for now. and here are the pictures. if you see a double, don't worry, there's a mirror in the background xD

Sorry to be the bearer of bads news Tropical_Mist but you made a big mistake (yet its common, everybody does it when they're starting out, so don't worry!)by adding all those fish at once. There's a slim chance that any of those fish will make it. If I were you I'd return all the fish or maybe your friend with the established tank they could take them for awhile, because since it is a new tank it will not be able to cope with all those fish. If you choose to cycle with fish, you have to start out with just one or two small fish at the beginning and then slowly within the course of the next few months add more. However the best way to do it (as it doesn't put any fish though stress and you won't loose any fish in the process) is to cycle the tank without fish (fishless cycle). I'll find some articles for you to read as they will help a lot!

Ok this will help, please read these and you will understand what I am babbling on about lol! :

i wasn't sure, but my friend's been doing this for years and he said it'd be fine. it's been set up since christmas eve with everything in it...except the plants and fish. oh well, i hope it'll be okay.

You don't have to take my advice (and the advice that you will begin to receive from everyone else....soon? Where is everybody? Anyways...) but for the sake of your fish PLEASE TAKE IT! Its not just a matter of "well I hope it'll be ok", because I swear on my grandfathers grave that it won't be, just please trust me. These fish are in your hands now and are your responsibility, please don't treat them as disposible pets just because they are cheap, treat them like you would a dog or a cat. I know that this is probably the last thing you want to hear at the moment, I really do understand, I have been in your shoes, you get the tank on christmas and its just doesn't seem "right" to let the tank sit there without fish in it. But we can help you through it (yes I do know I'm starting to sound like somebody at Alcoholics Anonymous lol)
Here is a quote from one of the "Newbie No-no's" that applies to your friend:

Be careful when you take advice from a person "just because it worked for him".

Wow, I completely missed that, nice catch, Meg.
t.ropical_m.istx3, she's right, that's a lot of fish to add in a 10g at one time. Your tank needs to cycle. Do you have a test kit? If not, buy one. It'll be your best friend. If it ever says you have ANY ammonia or nitrites, do a 25% water change. Test the next day, if it still says you have ammonia or nitrites, do it again. Eventually they'll go down, but cycles usually take about 4 weeks. Just DON'T add any more fish, and if you can, return some.

i tested it before we added anything and everything was perfect-PH was a bit high so we lowered it. we wouldn't have added anything otherwise. i got it before christmas and we had it set up since christmas eve, letting everything sit and cycle. my friend has everything from seahorses to tetras so i figured i could go with what he said.

and here, i'm not trying to sound rude, but how is returning them treating them as pets?
and i dont have a dog or cat xD

Ok well I am really tired and I need to go to bed so I'll make this quick.
Letting the tank "sit" without any ammonia source (AKA fish or pure ammonia) will not magically "cycle" the tank, which you would of found out if you had read the articles that I showed you. And when you tested the water, there would have been 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite (which is what you want in an established tank), but the important thing to look at is nitrAte, and that would have been at 0 also, which means that the tank is infact not cycled. I'm sorry to say but if your friend did not know this then he needs to do some research also, and to think he's owned "everything" and still does not know how to properly cycle a tank scares me.

And by returning the fish to the store they will not have to go through the cycle which will end up harming them and possibly killing them. I know it would seem like you are giving them up but really you'd be giving them the gift of life...in this case....if that made sense at all *yawn* ok I really need to get some sleep so HOPEFULLY somebody else will be along to help you! Good luck!

as i stated, i wasn't trying to be rude, i was just curious. i didn't get fresh gravel, i also used some from a previously cycled tank that's getting restocked with new gravel.

Okay well getting mature gravel will help. But testing your water on a brand new tank, of course is going to look great. Ph honestly should be the last of your worries. As soon as your fish start to produce waste, the waste will soon turn into ammonia, which is very toxic to fish. Which will snowball to an ammonia spike, therefore resulting in death of fish. That is a quick tid bit of info as to why you shouldn't just dump fish in. By putting tons of fish in, it will cause tons of ammonia basically. By adding little amounts of fish slowly you will only create a little amount of ammonia. Hopefully this makes sense to you. You will soon realize that the best thing you can do in the aquarium hobby is read, ask questions, and be skeptical. And this website will help you TONS and TONS. READ READ READ. Understand what you are doing before you make any rash decisions. Also take a look at the pinned topics as well. Start by surfing the beginner section and read the pinned topics whether you think it will help you or not. Good Luck and always get a second opinion!
