Hi all

I had 2 platy fry appear today, not sure which platy dropped has they still look fairly large!

My 30l tank has been clearing ammomia in 12 hrs and the nitrite is 0.25,well probably less than that, the blue just gets a tad darker.

My question is after a large water change would it be safe to move the 2 fry i have so far into the tank?I've managed too catch them and holding them in the breeding net at the moment.

personally I'd say leave them in the cycled tank for the water stats to stabalise in the cycling tank...as fry are generally more sensitive than fully grown fish.

Thats what i was thinking,it's just that i think the breeding net is spooking the harlequins, they seem to stay near the bottom of the tank.which normally they are quite active shoaling all over the place!

Well i may have made a boo boo,

Tank showed zero ammonia/nitrite this morning,so nitrite has finally cleared at 12 hr mark, and has the harlequins still seem freaked out by the breeding net in the tank,i decided to move the fry into the 30l tank.

I did completely empty the 30l and removed most of the gravel, left the bio sponge filter in a bucket of the used tank water while i was doing this, then i refilled partway with declorinated water and filled the other 3/4 with water from my 20 gal, plugged heater and airpump with sponge filter back on,left it for around 20 mins, then the fry which i managed to get out the breeding net into a 3 litre tank with tank water and floated them inside the 30l tank for about 10 mins, the water felt the same temperture wise.then gently tipped the fry and water in 30l.

I just hope i've done the right thing!

Keep a close eye on that tank Harlequins. You were at a point on the tank to start your qualifying week but now you will go through that using the fry as the ammonia source instead of the liquid ammonia. If you get any readings as high as 0.25 ppm you will need to do large water changes to protect the fry. Welcome to the world of fish-in cycling.

I will :good: i have checked it 3 times today,ammonia/nitrite 0,nitrate 20,ph 7.8,
I didn't really want to go through fish in cycle with these teeny fry but the harlequins just couldn't take to the breeding net being in the tank, all 10 of them remained hidden in a corner.

Since i have removed it from my 20 gal tank, the harlequins have been very active again.

And the 3 fry seem to be happy in the 30l,they are just venturing out of the corner of the tank, how can you tell if they are eating?,they're so tiny! i have been feeding them baby tetramin, liquidfry 2 and freeze dried brine shrimp,i assume if they weren't eating they would have died by now?

Be sure to do lots of water changes on that tank Harlequins. If you are giving all that variety, chances are good that there is some left over food when the fry can't eat any more.

Ok will do thanks :good:
I will be doing a W/C in a mo,yes there is some left overs ,i just hope i don't suck up the fish!

Have returned fry to main tank, holding them in floating breeding trap for a week or so,wasn't happy that there was a slight reading on the nitrite this morning, and the fry went into hiding after last nights w/c.

I feel happier that they are back in a stable tank,i'll just wait for the 30l to finish its cycle, hopefully not far from it now!
:good:
