i have a 210 litre tank, currently understocked with
1 dwarf gourami,
1 siamese fighter,
6 pentazona barbs,
3 panda corys,
4 yamato shrimp
and 2 red claw crabs

all of the above are half to two thirds their adult size
just wondering if anyone had ideas for how to make a big visual impact without adding a huge fish, i think a shoal of neon are in order (wanted angel or a few angels but i got the siamese fighter free and don't want the fin nipping!)

well your stocking is a bit messed up anyway

I suggest getting the fighter out of there as he will have his fins nipped anyway, a 2-10 gallon tank would be good for him.

the crabs will catch and eat most of the things in your tank and need salt, whilst the cories hate the stuff, so move the crabs.

then yeah, neons would be good

I am personally sick of gourami and will be moving a few, and getting discus :) OMG how exciting.

I agree with demonmagus.
Hatchetfish will occupate the top of the tank.
Flame Tetras will be in the middle.
Loaches are really fun to watch in an aquarium, just zipping around everywhere.
Apistos, very cool looking and heck, they are cichlids!

Neons... *snore* (dont mind me... neons just piss me off) Depending on how established your tank is and how experianced you are why not try cardinals? If they arnt your cup of tea then why not black neons (technically NOT neons)?

I agree that the gourami and Betta in the same tank is a BAD idea, move one (preferably the betta compatability wise) or get rid of both.

As was stated before red claw crabs are really not compatable with most community fish and esspecially not small schooling fish like the neons you want to get and salt hating cories. If you keep those in there then your options are going to be hugely limited, and thats never a good thing with a community tank especially when your in a transition like you are.

Heres what I would do...

Get rid of the crabs and shrimp and increase your panda cory school (they love big groups) and get a small school of tetra aswell as a few ottocinclus as algea eaters.

Basically do what you feel is best, but I strongly advise ditching the betta and crabs.
