I have a 55 gallon (4 foot) tank.
My current stocking is as follows:
1 Rainbow shark (3 years old, 3 inches)
1 CAE (3 years old, 4 inches)
1 Opaline gourami (3 years old, 3-4 inches)
13 neon tetras
13 corys of different kinds
5 amano shrimp.
Am I overstocked? Because I feel over stocked, but in writing it doesn't seem like a lot of fish. My water specs are all good as usual (ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrates 5-20 depending on closeness to water change). Fish are all happy and healthy and coexist peacefully. Many of them are actually survivors from when I was a brand new aquarist and they made it through several fish-in cycles (because I didn't even know fishless cycles were a thing). I run 2 internal filters and religiously do a 50% water change every week and filter cleanings once a month so that's not an issue. I recently rehomed the tiger barbs and black skirt tetras I had taken in as rescues, for many reasons, but one of them being this paranoia that I'm overstocked.
So, am I crazy or am I actually pushing the limits as far as my stock goes? I think it may have to do with my aquascaping (read, lack thereof) and maybe once I get the tank planted again and I can't see every single fish (besides sharky and CAE who often are hiding away) every time I look into the tank it won't feel so crowded.
Then again, I read about people keeping like 13 fish in a 5 gallon tank and I feel even crazier for feeling overstocked!
