My Tank....cycling

right, i know iv asked this alot...but i think this is the last time! lol

- My 7 gallon tank has been running and cycling with two danios for th past 2 weeks.
and im going to add a couple of fish....soon! but iv got a couple of questions!

Questions:

- the tanks gone a bit dirty - should i clean it out, wud this destroy bacteria?
- the filter is a bit clogged (but still running fine), shud i leave it for the bacteria to grow??
- im hoping to keep these, would it be ok:

- 2 Cherry barbs (1male/1female) - 1.5inch each = 3 inches
- 4 Black phantom tetras - 1.5inch each = 6 inches
- 2 Ottos - 1.5inch each = 3 inches
- Total: 8 Fish - 12 inches

wud this be ok stocking? (ill keep up on maintenence!!)

well seems your cycling it with fish. you should be doing water changes alot. everyday. if i've read right you are cycling with fish?

as for the filter i don't really know.

the fish you should of listened to all the suggestions we've already told you over and over again. you didn't listen to us then though so oh well. but you need more tetra's then 4 , i say 6. don't get the gourami.

i havent set it up and changed it, just u lot reccommend fish like just corys or shrimps.......as if...

and i do listen,iv learnt alot from ere

well i think it would be interesting. Plus that is your opinion so once you have the facts then it's up to you, no one else knows what you like and dont like so its not their fault if you dont like what they suggested.

- 2 cherry barbs! ok

I think 12" is too many fish for a 7 gallon. Also, Ottos are known to be sensative to water quality. In an overstocked 7 gallon tank, you will almost certainly have water quality problems at least some of the time. You would also need a filter that is oversized, like meant for up to 20 gallon tanks I think.

I personally would not go over 10 inches of fish in a 7 gallon. That is about 50% overstocked by that 1"/gallon rule of thumb. I would also avoid more sensative fish if I did that.

Cherry barbs, like most barbs, prefer to be in groups, not just pairs. Our fish profile recommends at least 6.

Therefore, I would not put cherry barbs in a 7 gallon tank.

Black phantom tetras have the same problem, like to be in groups.

Most say that ottos like to be in grouls of 3 or more.

Honey Gourami - I think that they would be OK in a 7 gallon if it is a long tank, not a hex tank. (and if the tank is not overstocked.)


If it were me, considering these choices, I would pick either a couple honey gourami, OR 5-6 black phantom tetras, OR 5-6 cherry barbs. If that sized tank, I would only get a snail for cleanup if you really want something to get algae off your glass. You could also just get one of those magnetic cleaners.

If your filter is getting clogged, change out a gallon of water, and shake / gently rub off the filter media in this old tank water.

your unbeliveable you were just wanting everyone to give you suggestions you throw it back in their faces and then go back to the thing you started with not taking in any advice.

you keeping a piranha is wrong but i think you don't desvere any fish after reading all you past posts in other topics. earlier you said to me that you didn't put any fish in your tank not supported by previous posts you've made.
