I love this little girl to pieces, even though she obviously hates my guts (she freaks out whever I go near the tank lol).

She's hard to photograph..very hard, as she's never still anytime you go near the tank. She darts around and hides behind, under, around anything she possibly can.

I bought her originally as a teeny weeny baby and BOY did she ever grow fast, and got WAY bigger then they said she would too. I got her without really knowing what she was..just thought it was cool how she swam upside down. I found out shortly after that she needed buddies, so I bought another one..and she killed it :/ .

So I left her alone, she does however mucho like the 2 cory's I have..and they equally like her as well. They hang out alot.

Hopefully though, these aren't the only photos I get of her...as our power is off and has been for days, with no idea when they will be back on :(. The water has already dropped to 75 degrees...from 82 and of course there is no filtration or airation in the tank now. They are all looking ok...but no so happy...for obvious reasons.

Anyways..here are some pics I snapped last nite of her (in case she dies :( )..that's why they are such bad quality..it was dark in the room when I took the pics.

I had to try and get some..cas I think she is just SO pretty. I wish I could get her to be still while I am taking pic and get a pic of her dorsal..it's magnificant, imo.

I think those white spots on her are just totally cool looking. The pics do her NO justice what-so-ever..trust me. Hopefully once the lights come back on I can get some better pics with a better camera.

Her name is Farida, which means Unique in African. I chose an African name, since they come from Zaire. :)

Very nice....I always wanted UDC's but whenever i went to buy them there was always a sick/dead fish so i walked away.

Good luck with the power situation...I know how nerve racking it can be with a tank and nothing running on it....Hopefully everything works out!!!

Thanks. They are really cool fish, even though they don't seem to be very personable lol.

Thankfully our power came back on last nite. I only lost 1 fish, a neon :(.

Everyone else seems to be doing fine :D.

Cool markings on your UDC!

She looks huge. Exactly how big is she?
I bought 3 back in Feb, and I hope they don't get that big. Mine are only about 2.5".

I'm glad you got your power back. :flex:

From nose to tail tip she's almost 5". I got her she was like 1.5" and in less then 6 months..kaPOW..she got HUGE! I have done some research since I got her and found they should be 4 - 4.5"..and I'm sure that means the body..nto including tail.

I really hate to re-home her..but I think I might have too. She's only in a 10 gallon. If I can find a decently priced 20 galllon I'm gonna buy one..otherwise I've asked my son's school if they want her for their 120gallon...it's very sparse in fish lol.

Ok..catfish people I need some help....

I originally though this fish was a Synodontis nigriventris, but after looking some up I now think she may actually be a Synodontis eupterus (due to the dorsal fin, and the pattern on the body and fins as well). Not to mentions she's well over 4", she's probably 5-6" (nose to tail..not fin) now.

BUT

She has those white spots down her sides...nothing mentions those...so I'm not sure if that's what she is or not. A few pictures I've seen of Synodontis eupterus have very light spots on their sides, nothing nearly as pronounced as farida's though...not even close...some don't even have them visable.

Here are the examples I found of Synodontis nigriventris

As you can see there are no white dots, plus the pattern is blotchy, insteady of spotted.

Has some faint white spots.

As you can see the body pattern looks more like this, as does the fins (especially the caudal) but there are only faint white spots on one of them. Those white spots on mine are making it hard for me to be sure which type Syno I have :/. HELP lol.

Yours is a beuty - whatever she is

but not a clue..... sorry :)

She looks like an Euruptus to me, but I'm no expert. They have them at the local shopping center of all places, in a display tank. They grow pretty big, and hold their own with big cichlids, plecs and an ospheroneous gourami.

Looks awesome though!

Thanks :)..I think she's pretty cute myself :D.

Yeah, after reading about this species I now understand why she killed the other UDC I bought for her...territorial reasons. She definately is teh boss of the tank, no one messes with her lol..except the cories....they like her..she tolorates them . I have seen her chase the baby UDC that is in there..but this one steers clear of her, and hide 90% of the time (I freak out on a regular basis; frantically trying to find it..bumping plants with the turkey baster trying to make it come out of hiding (gotta make sure it isn't dead lol).

Anyone else....I want to "know" what she is...you know. And those white dots are really throwing me off.

10 GALLON?!?!??!.....*sigh*

Actually, no...she's in a 20 gallon, long.

I had (this being the operative word) her in a 10 gallon when I first got her (at about 1" long) , with some tetras and rasboras, until I bought a larger tank..because I was under the impression she wasn't going to get over 4".

I love people who read (I just posted a thread about the 20L actually), try to learn, or atleast ask questions before passing judgment and acting all arrogant. **makes her own rude noise**

You are a massive hypocrite, your post clearly states:

She's only in a 10 gallon. If I can find a decently priced 20 galllon I'm gonna buy one

You put a synodontis catfish in a 10Gallon, i did read the post. Even a 20 Gallon is not really big enough. Syno's like a lot of room and even company if you have the space.

Yours is deffinately a Syno. Eeruptus that can easily get to 6", so should be in a 40gallon tank or bigger ideally. The line down the side is puzzeling but it could be something as worrying as a dyed marking.

And as for this comment..

try to learn, or atleast ask questions before passing judgment and acting all arrogant.

I suggest you try to learn or at least ask questions about the fish you are buying before you go out and buy it and put it in a 10 gallon tank.. I'm not arrogant, just concerned that a fairly large syno. could be kept in a tank far too small for it. Ok?

nice looking fish  , we have 4 altogether ....................My Son calls them feather fin synos 2 are in separate 55s , and the other 2 are in a 3' 30 gallon , I knew how big they'd get when I put them there , and will eventually move them , enjoy yours , and great if you can find it a home in that 125 ;)

We got three as "Upside down cats" Then they got to 4", and the bully of the three surged to about 6" They are still great catfish, pigs too :p

Hopefully yours will be a lot happier in a larger tank if you can find her one

Did you miss this part of the post?

I highly doubt that, as I'd like to know how she could have gotten dyed 6 months later in life? The line wasn't there when I got her, she had a completely different pattern actually..that line appeared as she grew up into a larger size.

This pic is from January, she's about 3-4 months old in the pic. You can see the dots started to appear, and have just gotten larger as she's gotten older.

Actually I did, and I researched UDCs...that is what I was told it was. I was told it got to 4" max, so I found no problem with having a 4" fish, 8 neons, and a cory in a 10 gallon tank (at the time, after I initially posted about her I was informed she might be happier in a 20gL so that's what I bought...now I discover she's not that type fish and every fact sheet I've read says they need a 30g, not 125g) I can't help someone gave me incorrect information regarding the type fish I was purchasing (and more fish) and I bought something I wasn't expecting. I'm sure that's never happened to you, right?

I think if you want to inform someone that their fish may need a bigger tank...you could just simply say that...not try to make them feel stupid. That just makes you look like a jerk.

That being said...I personally don't see why she needs a 125 tank, when all the fact sheets I have read so far say 30 gallons. The research I've done states they are aggressive towards other fish (which she is..she is highly hostile, she's already beaten a previous tankmate to death and chases the current one around if she spots it), and she doesn't come out very often...she seems to prefer being under the cypress stump I bought for her.
I did some research and found that these fish like to stay under things (rock ledges, stumps, logs, leaves, ect)...they aren't much for open tank swimming. I also installed a very strong current (which I read they also liked) with the (2) 30 gallon filters I have running...so until the other UDC (I'm fairly sure that it is a UDC...I did some further research on the baby version, after discovering Farida might not be a UDC, and the patterns match up) gets larger I don't see why I need a larger tank for her, since she doesn't move around a whole lot, unless she's eating a algea wafer, or some bloodworms?

I'm really curious on the reasons, so care to civily explain why I need such a large tank for a 6" fish that stays hidden 90% of the time?

Because when I can ever catch the baby UDC I'm going to take it out and put it in it's own tank (but it hides so well and I don't want to tear the tank down to get it out just yet...once it gets a little bigger it should be alot easier to spot and catch (he's really fast). The baby UDC is only about 1" long right now.
