Hello everyone :)

Ok so this is my first post; I have a few questions and I'm learning as I go with the help of a great local shop that are dead honest and helpful :)

I got a 60something litre tank about a month ago to transfer my gorgeous male superdelta betta (chips) as I rescued him from my sisters coldwater vase

He got dead happy in his new home, which has a gravel bottom a long piece of driftwood along the bottom and a cave which I made by laying a long thin rock over the driftwood and another rock. There's plenty of dense foliage too which he loves to hide and seek in.

I've since added 4 rainbow shark, 2 silver shark, soon to be 10 neon tetra - I'm considering some black phantom tetra too - and two female betta. Except I had to take one of the females back yesterday because the other has battered her half to death :(

So far I've been guided well by the shop and they say my set up and the tank is good :)

What I would like to know is; is my planned potential additions going to be ok?

I would like to add 2x plecs - I can take them back to the store and exchange for smaller ones when they get big -

I would also love a few tiger loaches but I'm not sure

A couple more girl bettas

I am debating over; cherry shrimp (half dozen maybe) a red crab, blue lobster - can I get a combination of these or would I have to settle for one or the other?

I've heard conflicting stories about the blue lobster attacking other fish - not sure if it's a good idea or not?

I'd love any advice at all :)

Hi,

Im not massively up to scratch on the fish keeping hobby, new to it myself. But Im pretty sure a 60L tank is just not big enough for the bettas. A male on his own would be fine, but I dont think anyone would advise putting the females in with him unless you were breeding. And if you do, I think there has to be lots and lots of cover to keep her out of his sight.

Someone please correct me if Im wrong, but I am sure that what I found out when looking in to Bettas.

Too many fish- DONT ADD ANY MORE.

Sharks need bigger tanks

most crabs and lobsters need special tanks with access to land.

Ask Some more experienced members for exact knowledge.

So in a 60l tank you have

1 Male Betta
4 Rainbow Sharks
2 Silver Sharks
Some Neon Tetra
And 1 (was 2) female Bettas
??

I just want to check, if this is the case then your lfs has given your dreadful advice. Going by that stocking either
A) They are extremely dishonest and just wanted your money so took advantage of your trust
B) Don't know the first thing about fish

Eitherways I wouldn't be returning there ever again, other than to return unsuitable fish of course ^_^

ok a fair few alarm bells started ringing when I read your post. Not to worry, you've done the right thing by asking before you stock anything else!

Okay, Betta's - males really need a tank to themselves, no other males or females, as they're agressive to anything that could resemble another male. Also, because of their fins, do well in small bodies of water with mininimal water movement, A 25-30L tank would be ideal for a single Betta! I'd reccomend buying him his own tank.

The rainbow sharks, and silver sharks will need to be re-homed or taken back, as both species grow too big for a 60L tank. Rainbow sharks are agressive to their own kind, and silver sharks need to be in large groups.

Neon Tetras are sensitive fish, and generally dont do well in new tank set-ups, most reccomend a mature tank of atleast 6 months old to give them the best chance of living.

Again, plecs will get too big, and taking them back when they are too big should not be an option, you're placing them under unnecessary stress, and theres no gurantee your shop will take them when they're bigger.

Again, Tiger loaches get too big

Shrimp would be ok, I dont know about lobster, but I think they get too big, and I believe crabs need a beach area and shallow water to thrive.

If you moved the betta into his own, cycled tank, then you could stock your 60L with some cory catfish, or maybe 1 BN plec and a nice school of small fish such as Danio's or Rasboras.

really none of those fish are ok with a betta so you should take them back except maybe the tetras but still risky as they can be fin nippers

no dont as its just to small

I would also love a few tiger loaches but I'm not sure

again tank to small

A couple more girl bettas

the girl bettas arnt meant to be with males

I am debating over; cherry shrimp (half dozen maybe) a red crab, blue lobster - can I get a combination of these or would I have to settle for one or the other?

the cherry shrimp is the only sutable one crab is brackish and the lobsters to big

I've heard conflicting stories about the blue lobster attacking other fish - not sure if it's a good idea or not?

not a good idea

I'd love any advice at all :)

hope that helps

ps dont trust the fish sshops

Sorry if I came across rude.
I was on about the LFS.
As im guessing they let you buy these fish.
Dont worry.
Just take advise off all these smart people.
And you and your fish will be happy.
I promise.

Hmm.
All I can think of is..
"Here we go again"

YF

Bear in mind that these fish are rather small when you buy them from the lfs.
And also they tend till still be quite peaceful at lfs size (Even if they grow up to be monsters like CAE's)
It's very easy to believe everything the shop tells you as a newbie. I mean they make a business out of keeping fish don't they, they ARE the experts... *Even I just laughed at that sentence* hehe.

But anyways, my point is that the fish wont fill the tank so much as to make you think twice, they will be calm with eachother, and you have your trust in the lfs which said everything will be fine.

Edit: Ah YF you were talking about the lfs *nods* it's very much the same story isn't it. This is where the store directory that BigC is putting together will come in very handy!

my apologies mate, did'nt realise you were talking about the LFS :good: Though you meant this sort of thread, sorry.

OP it seems like all the advice that your LFS gave you was dreadful.

Perhaps you should reconsider your good opinion of them?

WOW

Yeah ok so no more fishies then :S

In the shop they have a single betta in most of the tanks - I got the rainbows, silvers and tetras from these tanks. Would that not mean they're accustomed to having a Betta in with them? I did check out the shop bettas in those tanks and they were all in good nick. No signs of nipping or anything like that.

I'm going back in to pick up/decide on the injured girl betta later - she was in a right state after a few days; middle of the bottom fin just gone, tattered dorsal and her tail was shred to pieces - scales missing and a big raised injury (white coloured) on her left side :(

Should I be saying anything when I get there? Are the cherry shrimp still ok for the cleaning? Or a plec? Or just definitely no more additions?

I think on your return visit you should return:
4 Rainbow Sharks
2 Silver Sharks
And all/both/the 1 remaining female betta OR the male betta

The rainbow sharks will eventually outgrow your tank and tear each other to pieces
Silver sharks will also outgrow your tank
Female + Male Bettas are NOT to be kept together or they will eventually attack each other. You need to choose between one of the other. And if you do ever buy fish from that shop again then research what you are going to buy before you go. And don't go on their advice. I've found this forum is one of the best and more reliable places to get information.
