My guppy looks like he has fin rot and i have been advised to do a water change and put some salt in but i know this can harm scaleless fish as it burns them. How much salt do i put in and what fish are classed as scaleless? this might sound like a stupid question but all my fish look like they have scales but i want to be sure so i dont harm any of them!

???? :fish:

RIght now I am treating a female guppy and a male leopard juvenile for fin rot with Melafix & Pimafix.

Catfish are scaleless. like corys, loaches, ottos etc. I have 4 corys so I add only half the dosage of salt than required on the package. My corys tolerate that amount with no problem. I have a 20g so you're supposed to add 4 tablespoons for 20g so I only add 2 tablespoons.

well ive got 2 corys and 2 loaches so i guess id better be very careful! i take it you mean a special salt bought from a LFS rather than just normal salt???

also ive just noticed my golden algae eater is going a bit mad and chasing my siamese fighter?! Are they normally agressive because i did originally think they'd been bitten rather than have fin rot so is it likely my guppies could have been attacked by him?!

???? :fish:

I know for sure the golden algae eater is aggressive...I had on that tried to attach to my Gourami and suck on him..had to get rid of it. I use Dr. Wellfish Aquarium Sale that I bought at lfs...table salt is not good since its not pure salt, often has iodine and other stuff.

DO NOT USE SALT.

please read my reply in your other thread, about your guppies, your tank is full of fish that are not suited to go together.

if your realy realy suck, please PM me.

SALT WILL KILL YOUR ALGAE EATER! I wouldn't recommend it, and guppies are extremely sensitive fish too, especially to salt.
Use medication for Fin Rot, and steer clear of the salt!
