i live in australia can anyone recommend what the best food is for him

He should be OK with basic tropical flake food but you can also get some specially-formulated Betta (Siamese fighter) foods. If there's nothing local to you perhaps you could order off the internet?

This one is really good: www.theaquariumshop.com.au - but TBH it's not worth the shipping if all you want is a packet of betta food. Everything under 7kg is $7 to ship. The best thing to feed them in my opinion is Hikari Betta Bio-gold. Mine are thriving on it.
