My Rcc & Hermit Tank

Well i woke up this morning to find one of my RCCs dead... which in a way, I saw coming. From the get-go, when i bought him he only had 3 legs, and 1 claw, obviously not good. But not im wondering, did he die because of .. i gues you could say something like 'depression? lol Just joking, but my other RCCs seem to be doing well, if anything, it looks like some kind of white matter is building up on the tank floor. And are bloodworms the best food for this situation?
humm can say i have come across the white stuff, but i will poll some other keepers to see if they have. inverts are notorious for just dropping dead, or apparently so. was the colour of the crab any different to the others? as for the food, bloodworm is fine for the early months of the crab. but as they mature they need a more veg based diet. these guys are not carnivores, they are in fact veg based omnivores. in nature they comb the tide line for the detritus the sea has brought in.

Well, the crab, which is now dead, was turning a pale orange, very pale... then the next day he just didnt move anymore. As for veggie based foods, which way should I go, do water plants live in brackish water?

get hold of some hornwort, duckweed and cabomba. get a small 1g-3g tank. fill it with water. put in a sunny place, change the water every week or so. this is how i fed my crabs. the hornwort won't stop growing, trust me!

*Update?*

Well the weirdest thing in the world happened to me... I HAD 4 crabs til, erm, one died right? I took it out of the tank and threw it away, right? Why do I count 4? Did one molt or something? Without me knowing? Im confused.. I thought they molted OUTSIDE the water, what happened? Did it happen over night? Im still puzzled... And once again I want to ask, where could i possibly get some hornwort weeds?

lol looks like theymolted, yes it happens overnight. the crab will be very stressed and delicate at this time, try not to mess about with the tank or anything too much.

as for the hornwort, i can send you some to get you started. or you can ask in the buy sell swap section.

lol it can happen in minutes, well the actual shedding of the carapace can. i think most people who keep these guys have this happen. lol i know i did! :good:

Ah, I figured. I was scared for the most part, great thing is, he has his legs back ^_^
And if you could, the hornwort would be great! If you need to speak with me I have msn messenger @ unkn0wnfox@gmail.com

Thanks guys for, calming myself down, now I know what a molt-shell looks like, thanks again! And now iv'e been through my first molt, for my RCCs that is... now have to wait for my Hermies.

Just wondering also, Im curious about Blue Lobsters, would that be a good idea or bad idea? That is for either my freshwater tank or brackish tank (which ever they prefer?) They seem awesome to have.

if you are thinking of putting Blue lobster in this sort of environment, NO absolutely not. Crayfish need an aquatic environment. they can get about on land, but this is because they need to move from one place to another to feed or be comfortable. effectively an emergency reaction to stay alive. it is often true that a crayfish that is trying to get out the water, is not just going for a walk. it is trying to get out of a environment it dislikes. i have seen it work in a community tank, but this is really not a good way to keep the crabs.

Ah ok. I had a feeling about that, just love the way they look ^_^ well thanks for tellin me. Now just need to get a hold of some hornwort or some kind of water plant for my crabbys

tell you what though, just you need a big tank. Crayfish can stand 3ppt of salt no problem, can you imagine a brackish tank with Columbian sharks and Crayfish, now that would be a sight to see!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Hi everyone! Just wanted to update u all on how my tank is doing, and actually, all my crabs, even the hermits look very happy. What iv'e done was added slightly more land for the hermits, and added a few more rocks for them to climb. Also added some hornwort plants, which my RCCs seem to enjoy. Oh and another crab just molted the other day, was pretty cool. Heres some recent pics of my tank:

4 RCCs, 3 hermits. they all seem to be doing very well, just waiting for the hermits to molt, that, imo, is the real test.
