Hi. Im not a huge fish person so I probably wont be a regular poster here. I need advice on what to do with my Powder Blue Cichlid. I bought him/her at a pet store about a year and a half ago as a juvinile(fish not me) and quickly it became aggressive with my other fish. I had 3 other species of Cichlids in with him but after he killed 2 I ended up giving the third cichlid away. So other than a constantly tormented plecos he lives alone. I actually love this fish so instead of flushing him down the toilet or giving him to a pet store,I am trying to find him a GOOD home. He is quite beautiful and healthy so I am sure someone would love to have him. I would like to keep him but I need the aquarium for my soon to be Dartfrog display. I am not sure how to indentify gender but if it helps I do know that it has the white spots on the fins. I am not positive it is even Pseudotropheus socolofi but it appears to be. I am coming to the experts of this forum on what would be the best way to insure he gets a good home. I dont mind shipping although I worry about that method. I know toxins build up fast and it is hot right now. Taking him to a pet shop is a gamble because they dont care who gets them and many people dont cycle there tank well. I am not trying to sell my fish as I would just like to give him away to someone who will take care of him. Also,my poor Pleco is in need of a home also.
PS My Cichlid is about 3-4 inches . I can send pics if needed.

Sorry I won't be of much help but please, just for the record if you will, never flush a fish -whether dead or alive - down the toilet. If you want to get rid of a living fish either re-home or return it, if you want to dispose of a dead fish, throw it in the garbage.

edit: Oh, and post this in the buy/sell/swap forum...

Ifa fish has died there was obviously something wrong with it. Fish go into the sewage which then ends up in the ocean and/or where other fish may be. The other fish may pick eat the dead fish and pick up its diseases
 Uh...you are kidding right? I wasnt aware that they dump raw sewage in the ocean :-( Most cities run there sewage through a filter and you end up drinking the same pee water your Aunt May shat out last week. My water goes in a septic tank and bye the way,I never said I was going to flush my fish anyway. If he died I wouldnt hesitate to flush him or anything else small enough to fit in the toilet. And if he did end up in the ocean I think all the dirty tampons, condoms, urine, and fecal matter would have more of an impact on the enviroment...ah whats the point of this...anybody want my good buddy before I take him to a pet store?

Herpmaster,

Unless you can find someone nearby that will take him, your best bet is probably the local pet store. I think you are right on target about trying to ship him with the weather being so hot right now. Most pet stores that know anything about fish, especially cichlids, won't sell him to someone who has no idea what they are doing. I've heard the pet stores that I've purchased mine from quizzing people about tank size, if they have cichlids only in the tank, etc. Even the guy at Wal-Mart asked me those questions one time! Anyhow, good luck to you, and kudos for trying to find your fish a good home. You're not located in Texas by any chance are you?

As for the second topic that's been started on this thread....I work for a Civil Engineering company and it's rumored that the little guys at the EPA get a little testy if you try to bypass the Wastewater Treatmen Plant and drain direct sewage into the ocean, lake, river, neighbor's backyard, or public swimming pool!!
