i have recently bought 2 plecs 1 red spotted and 1 golden spotted thy are still small about 2 inches i have got 2 or 3 questions id like help with please 1= i dont know what veg to feed them 2= what size when do i start to feed them the veg 3=im feeding them normal tropical fish food along with the rest of the tank is this ok? and lastly the golden one is more active than the red is this normal ? many thanks in advance joe

I am by no means the most experienced poster here, but I will help if I can:

I feed my fish slices of cucumber (some people remove the skin to ensure that no contaminants get in the water), slices of pumpkin (seasonal thing... :shifty:   ) or other squash. I just keep an eye on the slice and if it doesn't all go before it goes mushy.......it comes out.

At two inches in size, the fish are no longer really fry, give them veg! I give most of my fish veg, even at the fry stage (especially the plecs).

All my tanks get standard tropical fish food and none of them have complained about it yet. :D I have seen the Bristlenoses (BNs) eating most food, even the odd dead fish.

Good luck.

Try posting this in the catfish forum because most likley no one will be able to help you, but I will at least a little bit. Answer to question 1: Just feed them sinking algae wafers thats all I feed mine. Answer to question # 2: You can feed them at any size. Answer to question #3: No its not ok to feed them the tropical flakes, also plecos are nocturnal and are more active at night also another reason might be because you don't feed them the sinking algae wafers. What size tank are they in?

not all plecos are vegeterian. Different plecos have different needs
some eat only meat like the zebra pleco

it would help to know the exact species of the plecos as red spotted and gold spotted are not very accurate names.

thanks for all the feed back guys (sorry for posting in the wrong place as i am a new aquarium owner)as for the xact spieces im not sure ill need to ask the shop where i got them as for the tank size its a 100 litre/22 gallon tank and i guess ill need to get those algae wafers then.................do they eat fruit by any chance like apples?

it all depends on the exact species, you can also try adding things like froozen bloodworm, lancefish and muscles which all of my plecs eat.

the majorty of plecs are omnivores so it's important to give them a varied diet and not just algae waffers, even using catfish pellets aswell is better than just algae waffers.

being scavengers yes you could feed them flake but you would probable need to need an alful lot to ensure some gets to the bottom.

i'm not sure about your red spotted but the other 1 sounds like a golden nugget plec which will deffinately apriciate some meaty foods in his diet.

any chance of some pictures? you can upload these dirrectly to the site in the member picture section.
