We just set up a 5 foot tank that our friend gave us and it had 2 common plecs in it.
1 small youngen about 1 year old id say and a big fellow about 13inches long and is 6/7 years old.
when i looked at the fish tank with them all in it was lovely, really chuffed with it, i noticed that a peice of wire led was on the bottom.
(you know the thing the put around your plants to keep them from floating) so i asked my partener to clean the tank out and he must have completely forgot about it.
The next day i came in and the little plec was dead, but not just dead he was all over light blue with dark blue lines running trough him,and at the bottom of the tank it was one of the worst things i had ever seen in my life, obviously the donor wasnt very happy, we couldnt figure out what it was and then i remembered about the led and yet it wasnt there anymore (dont ask me to do an autopsy he really did make my gag whith the stench)
I really dont want you to think im a bad fish keeper, im new to it but the reason i didnt get it out was becasue the big catfish, i was scared of it when i first saw him because when i tried putting my hands in before he swam fastly to me, it scared me lol.
So does anyone else think what im thinking?
Could the common plec have eaten it and then it killed him?
Thanks for the help everyone

Sorry for your loss

As for what killed him i have no idea, i've never heard of fish going blue before death you'll have to have someone elses help there.

It's not impossible for him to have eaten the LED though.

Thank you, i just thought that '###### that would make me proper ill' and im about 50 times bigger than the catfish (not in waists people) but you know, it could kill him, and the colour! it just didnt look like him at all, usually there dark brown with light patches etc but he was a pale creamy blue with blue veins almost, gross!

you said you've just set up the tank this is most probably your biggest problem

What are the water stats for ammonia , nitrites , nitrates and ph
has it got a filter on it
is the filter cycled - dead fish do go funny colours

Yeah, we did keep all the water from the old tank and both filter were running for approx 45mins before we put him in, also, the same filter from the old one and it was turned off for about an hour? would that still be the biggest problem?
If so WOW - i never knew thats what they looked like when they got poisoning from that, maybe i should have taken a photo for others as a deterrant ...
Thanks for the help!

have you tested the water ?
ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
ph etc

Old water will do nothing for your tank it's the filter that holds all the bacteria, were u using an old filter or a new one?

As pip has already said what are your test results?

Hi, sorry for the late reply, i thought the old water would help, woops!
its the same filter from the tank, im testing the water today after work at my LFS
*fingers crossed*
ive bought a all in one tablet test from ebay last night (whatta bargain lol)
so that will arrive on monday, real shame, i know full well i should already have one but i guess a learning curve has arrived hehe.
Il let you know the results later on people!
