My Platty

So as you may have seen from my previous topic, my platty was supposedly pregnant...that was a couple of weeks ago and still no fry.
Now, she is just as big, but the male has taken a real interest in her and is chasing her around, causing her to hide under the piece of driftwood in my 10g.

Is there a way, without putting him in a new tank, to get my male platty to leave the female alone?

Okay, thanks. I was getting a little worried because the other fish have been following her for about a week now and I also cleaned the filter a little too thuroghly (my first time cleaning the filter oops) and I ended up with an ich outbreak in my Mollies and even losing a fry. I figured that the stress would have been high for the platies as well, and she probably aborted them.

But do you know of a way, other than taking one of the two out of the tank, for the male (redbelly the pirate, as I've named him) to stop chasing the female (pumpkin)?

Nothing you can do other than adding about 2 more females in there for him to chase around. You should have 3 females for every male platy to avoid this situation. You also need to add more plants in your tank for hiding places for the females and fry to escape from anyone chasing them.

I would avoid the breeding traps. They tend to stress the females out more. I raise platy and I never remove them to drop fry. My tanks are all full of plants for the fry to hide in and I have enough females to keep the males from harassing any one female too much. If you must remove the female to drop then you need to do it about a week before she drops so she has time to relax and isn't too stressed. Over stressing can cause them to drop fry too soon which will give you a batch of underdeveloped fry that will not live. I would only use a breeding trap as a very last resort. Unless you have more females the male will just harass your female through the breeding trap as well.

alright, thanks! I have a second 10 g (only half full) set up already, and I was going to put her in that so that she could birth there. The only thing I'm worried about is that the pump I have for the second one is really high up, at the top of the tank, and I basically have a miniature waterfall. Would this stress her or the potential fry out at all?

That sounds good. But it may be too late to move her now, since she is so close to dropping. It could cause a stillbirth or abortion if you move her to a new tank now. I would just put a bunch of floating plants in your main tank, and chances are, most of the babies will hide and survive. And like the other folks on here said, get two more female platies, that way the male's attention is disperced.
By the way, once the babies are born, put them in the 10 gallon, and raise them in there. That's what I do.

Crap, I just moved her like, not even 20 minutes ago. Should I put her back, or will that just make it worse? She stayed at the bottom of the new tank for a few minutes but she's already swimming a little and eating the food I put in. I also have a 1/2 gallon Betta tank, which I only use now when changing water or transporting fish (i had two bettas at different times, both of them died.) and that is what I used to transport her to the new tank.

Infact, I left that in there so that there's at least something in the water to help her hide if the pump is too strong.

Also, I'll be sure to get a sponge over the intake right away. Thanks

No, don't move her back. That will only stress her out more. She most likely will be fine, just keep an eye on her. Good idea with the betta tank.

Thanks! actually, now she's swimming about so fast and frequently that I can't get a good picture to put up.

Dating? sorry I'm pretty new at this. Umm, she's swimming quite normally, throughout the whole tank. And since there's almost nothing in her way, she's just going about her business, basically where ever she wants.

To be honest, I thought she was going to give birth when she was in the community tank because she was being anti-social and hanging around the pump, but now that she's by herself, she's acting normal again. haha hopefully she gives birth soon because this is ridiculous.

aw crap... haha umm she's not really darting to and fro anymore, but for about an hour or so she was. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if she did abort because there's my male who was chasing her around for ages, after she suddenly stopped hiding in the grass... I figured she decided to hold off but I needed to keep her away from the male anyways, until I got another female platty. I figured he'd try to get friendly with my Mollys, although I know he's not capable of breeding with them, but I thought it might keep him occupied, but I was wrong.

Also, don't worry I thought you were talking about something to do with age, or time. Not actual dating
