Hi, I have recently bought three Platies from Petco, and they aren't coming to the top to eat when I put flakes or blood worms in the tank. What can I do to help them go to the top to eat when I put the food in?

Hi Noah, welcome to the forum.

Fish very often don't eat much when they're new to a tank; they have to settle in.

However, to rule out any other issues, I'm going to ask you a load of questions; sorry!

How big is your tank, how long has it been set up, was it cycled and have you tested the water at all? What fish do you have in there (species and numbers)?

If you could answer those, we can make sure there's nothing else going on that might be stopping your fish from eating

Going a long with the post above, do you have a heater in your tank? it could be too cold for them as well if not

Oh, good call! I'd forgotten about that

Noah; does your tank have a heater, and if so what temperature are the fish at? And I've just remembered; do you have a filter?

My tank is 2.5 gallons (I know it is a little small for 3 platys but it was all I could afford) , and it has been up for 2 days now. I haven't tested the water, and it isn't cycled. I have a Mickey Mouse, a red platy, and a sunset fire wag something (sorry I don't remember!)

No I don't have a heater, but I tested it about an hour ago and it was about 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Yes I have a filter too, and turn it off to feed them

Well I know this isn't what you want to hear but if it was me I'd take the platys back and get a betta they are much better for a tank of that size :(
