My Ph

What was your Ph normally? Is it normally at 6? If it is I would probably leave it as playing around with your PH can do more harm than good once you have your fish in there. Typically a low PH is more suitable for a Discus if you go by info on the web but generally most Discus are now tank bred so you should try to match your tank to the water that the breader has.
In general terms a low PH is a low KH (not always the case) What is your KH?
Do you have bog wood in there as it can slowly drop the PH? Are you injecting CO2 as this will drop the PH but is not a detrimental PH drop.

IMO if your PH is normally 6 leave it alone.

i don't regularly check my ph there is no fish in the tank at the moment as i sold the fish i had in it. there is gravel in the tank a slate and three plants that look like grass vallis something or other lol i just thought that the ph should be higher will most fish be ok for that.

Ok. Do you know what the ph was when you had fish?

If you don't have any fish in there at the moment are you doing a fishless cycle? As that can drop your KH due to the NitrAte build up which inturn reduces your PH(a PH crash).

If you are not doing a fishless cycle and you are getting fish soon I assume that you will be doing a fish in cycle which is ok if you like doing water changes or if you don't do water changes you will damage your fish.

I'm not sure if you are actually a begginer to fish or not, but if you are I would suggest having a look at the New to hobby section and read a few of the Pinned articles. They were very helpful to myself when I started.

A Low PH is recommeded for Discus but is not nessisary as most are bred in a tank enviroment and not the wild where the ph is low. I am not sure about the PH requirements of other species of fish as they come second to my Discus when it comes to water quality. BUT it do think that yours is low for the majority of the general fish species.

the tank has been running for well over a year now i have been keeping fish for two years now but still learning more and more each day.i don't know what the ph was when there were fish in it the fish were angel fish and they were sold on friday last week. Im going to be adding fish tommorow. what would you rcommend for putting in.

The reason nobody is telling you how to raise your pH is because even if you fix the problem, it will return down the road. It could be as simple as very high nitrates in the water and all you need to do to fix the problem is to change the water more often. I have low pH due to a very low KH. and thus I can condition my water accordingly. THis is because I know why it is low. I woudl suggest getting an API Master Test Kit and let us know the readings. Make sure and follow the directions exactly!

I'd agree with drobbyb. If your Ph out of your tap after sitting on the bench for a few hours is PH 6 and the tank is 6 leave it.
If it isn't there is a reason for the diffenece and you need to know what the reason is before you can play around with it. PH up and PH down are short term products as generally the PH returns back to what it was the next day or even hours. So I do not reccommend these. The fish shop will however to make a quick buck.
You really need to work out waht your water is doing. PH, Nitrates, Nitrates and KH at the least to know how to effectivly manage the quality.

On a side note. How are you still keeping the filter bacteria going as you currently have no ammonia from fish to keep your bacteria fed? If you haven't done anything you will more than likely end up with a fish in cycle which will require water changes to keep the ammonia at 0.
